Draft Days 2 & 3 Preview

Brandon Powell MIN WR
Vikings' Brandon Powell: Leading No. 3 WR candidate
5h agoPowell, Jalen Nailor and Trent Sherfield are the leading candidates for the No. 3 receiver role after the Vikings did not take a wide receiver in the 2024 Draft, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
It was a mild surprise the Vikings didn't draft a wide receiver after the departure of K.J. Osborn (New England) in free agency, leaving Powell as the leading candidate for the No. 3 receiver role. The Vikings could add a veteran free agent later this spring to compete for the job. Whoever wins the role could get a significant number of targets early in the season with tight end T.J. Hockenson likely to miss several games in coming back from January surgery for a torn ACL.

Trey Sermon IND RB
Colts' Trey Sermon: Poised for backup role
6h agoWith the Colts not taking a running back in the 2024 Draft, Sermon and Evan Hull are the primary backups to starter Jonathan Taylor, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
It was a mild surprise that the Colts didn't draft a running back or sign a prominent undrafted free agent to compete for the starting role. It's possible the Colts will sign a veteran free agent this spring for depth, but at this point Sermon could have a prominent backup role. He rushed 35 times, including 17 carries in Week 15, for 160 yards to go along with three catches for 13 yards with Indy last season.
-
Alec Pierce IND WR
Colts' Alec Pierce: Competition for starting job
6h agoPierce and 2024 second-round draft pick Adonai Mitchell will compete on the outside for the No. 3 receiver role in training camp, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Pierce has been the starting deep threat for the Colts the last two campaigns but without much production (just 32 receptions for 514 yards and two touchdowns last season). While that may have been due to poor quarterback play and a game plan that didn't throw the ball deep, it has opened the door for a dynamic talent like Mitchell to compete for his job. Mitchell, the former Texas and Georgia receiver, dazzled at the NFL Scouting Combine (4.34-second 40-yard dash, 136-inch broad jump) following a productive end to his Longhorns career (55 catches for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns on 92 targets in 2023).

Daxton Hill CIN DB
Bengals' Dax Hill: Operating as cornerback in 2024
10h agoHill is expected to be a part of the Bengals' cornerback room in 2024, Jay Morrison of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Hill spent his sophomore campaign operating as a starting safety for the Bengals, recording 110 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, while also intercepting two passes and deflecting 11 others over 17 contests. Head coach Zac Taylor said Sunday that Hill will "be in the cornerback room" this year, which could mean a position change is in store. The team signed former Raven Geno Stone this offseason and could replace Hill at safety in 2024.
-
Harrison Mevis 2005 K
Harrison Mevis: Heading to Carolina
10h agoMevis is slated to sign with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent Sunday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Mevis made 24 of 30 field-goal attempts at Missouri last year, including a 61-yard conversion that set an SEC record. He'll now challenge Eddy Pineiro during offseason activities.
-
Michael Wiley 2005 RB
Michael Wiley: Signing with Washington
10h agoWiley (thumb) is slated to sign with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Wiley wasn't selected during the 2024 NFL Draft but will have a chance to compete for a role with Washington during offseason activities. He sustained a thumb injury during the Senior Bowl in March, and it's unclear when he'll be back to full health.
-
Christian Walker ARI 1B
Diamondbacks' Christian Walker: Clubs solo home run
4m agoWalker went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in Sunday's 3-2 in over the Mariners.
Walker got things started with a solo blast off Logan Gilbert in the second inning to knot the game up at 1-1. He later doubled in the fourth but was left stranded. The 33-year-old slugger has notched at least a hit in five straight games while homering twice and racking up five RBI over that span. For the year, he's slashing .271/.383/.439 with five homers, 18 RBI, 21 runs and an 18:31 BB:K in 128 plate appearances.
-
Logan Gilbert SEA SP
Mariners' Logan Gilbert: Little run support Sunday
9m agoGilbert did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks. He allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out nine in 6.1 innings.
Gilbert allowed an early solo home run to Christian Walker in the second. He was then able to keep the Diamondbacks off the scoreboard until Eugenio Suarez doubled home another run in the seventh to even things up at 2-2, ultimately knocking Gilbert from the game and spoiling his chance at a win. Still, it was another excellent outing from the 27-year-old. His nine strikeouts were a season-high and he's managed to go at least six innings and all but one start so far. Gilbert now owns a sparkling 2.03 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 44:9 K:BB in 40 innings and lines up to face the Astros on the road next weekend.
-
Josh Rojas SEA 3B
Mariners' Josh Rojas: Smacks leadoff home run
16m agoRojas went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks.
Rojas slid into the leadoff spot after J.P. Crawford (oblique) was placed on the IL before the weekend. He responded with home runs Friday and Sunday with Sunday's being his very first at-bat of the game off Brandon Pfaadt. Since April 15, Rojas has at least a hit in 10 of 11 games and is off to a productive first month of the season. He's slashing .297/.366/.516 with three homers, six RBI, 10 runs and a 7:12 BB:K in 71 plate appearances.
-
J.D. Davis OAK 3B
Athletics' J.D. Davis: Plays in rehab game Sunday
4h agoDavis (thigh/groin) started at designated hitter for Triple-A Las Vegas against Sacramento on Sunday and went 1-for-4 with a double and a run.
Davis was given the green light to suit up Sunday after partaking in baseball activities with the Aviators on Saturday. Having apparently gotten through Sunday's contest without any issues, Davis is now slated to rejoin Oakland on Monday, when a decision on whether he'll need more rehab games or if he's ready for activation will be made.
-
J.P. Crawford SEA SS
Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Already feeling better
4h agoCrawford (oblique) was able to field some grounders and do light jogging in the outfield before Sunday's series finale against the Diamondbacks, MLB.com reports.
The activity is significant, considering Crawford was just diagnosed with a Grade 1 oblique strain Wednesday. Crawford is still expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks, but he noted he was feeling much better Sunday than a few days prior, when he'd found it painful to even cough or make general movements.
-
Junior Caminero TB 3B
Rays' Junior Caminero: Blasts two homers with Durham
4h agoCaminero went 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs and three RBI on Sunday with Triple-A Durham.
Caminero was sidelined for two weeks early in the season with a quad injury. In nine games since, he's gone 11-for-36 with seven extra-base hits while striking out at a 23.1 percent clip. The Rays have had a mediocre lineup, and Jonathan Aranda (finger) is nearing a return, but Caminero should still make his way to Tampa Bay at some point in the current campaign.
-
Myles Turner IND C
Pacers' Myles Turner: Leads from deep in balanced Game 4
8h agoTurner posted 29 points (10-17 FG, 7-9 3Pt, 2-6 FT), nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks over 38 minutes in Sunday's 126-113 win over the Bucks in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Turner continued his strong performance in the series against Milwaukee, taking advantage of the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo (calf) by putting together another well-rounded outing to help Indiana to a commanding 3-1 series lead. Turner led all players in Sunday's contest in threes made while leading the Pacers in scoring, rebounds and blocks in a near double-double showing. Turner has been dominant all series, posting at least 20 points and seven rebounds in three of his four postseason outings.
-
Tyrese Haliburton IND PG
Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton: Boosts offensively in Game 4 win
8h agoHaliburton finished with 24 points (8-16 FG, 5-12 3Pt, 3-3 FT), four rebounds four assists and one steal over 32 minutes in Sunday's 126-113 win over the Bucks in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Haliburton followed up his breakout performance in Friday's Game 3 by putting forth another strong outing in Game 4, connecting on a handful of threes while ending as one of two Pacers players with 20 or more points in a winning effort. Haliburton tallied his highest point total of the series against Milwaukee, also connecting on more than three shots from beyond the arc for the first time of the playoffs. Look for Haliburton to have another big game in a potential series-clinching Game 5 as he attempts to lead Indiana to the next round.
-
Pascal Siakam IND PF
Pacers' Pascal Siakam: Well-rounded showing in Game 4
8h agoSiakam notched 13 points (6-14 FG< 0-4 3Pt, 1-3 FT), nine rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block over 40 minutes in Sunday's 126-113 win over the Bucks in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Siakam has been outstanding for Indiana all series against Milwaukee, posting a well-rounded performance in Sunday's Game 4 while helping the Pacers take a commanding 3-1 series lead. Siakam struggled shooting a bit from the field, but he still reached double figures in scoring while ending one rebound and three assists short of a triple-double. Siakam has tallied at least 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists in two games this series, and we should expect him to continue to shine for Indiana in a potential series-clinching Game 5 in Milwaukee.
-
Malik Beasley MIL SG
Bucks' Malik Beasley: Tallies 20 points in Game 4 start
8h agoBeasley tallied 20 points (8-12 FG, 4-7 3Pt), three rebounds and two assists over 34 minutes in Sunday's 126-113 loss to the Pacers in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Beasley entered the starting lineup Sunday with Damian Lillard (Achilles) being added to Milwaukee's inactive list, connecting on a team-high mark from three. Beasley reached double figures in scoring for the first time of the postseason, connecting on at least three threes in two straight outings. If Lillard is unable to return in a win-or-go-home Game 5, look for Beasley to remain in the starting lineup or at least have a large role in the rotation for the Bucks.
-
Brook Lopez MIL C
Bucks' Brook Lopez: Nears double-double as top scorer
8h agoLopez notched 27 points (12-18 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 0-4 FT), nine rebounds, one assist and one block over 39 minutes in Sunday's 126-113 loss to the Pacers in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Lopez led all Bucks players in scoring in Sunday's loss while connecting on a trio of threes and ending one rebound shy of a double-double in a balanced performance. Lopez has stepped up as the leader in the paint for Milwaukee during the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo (calf), reaching double figures in all four postseason games while finishing with his highest scoring and rebound marks of the series thus far.
-
Khris Middleton MIL SF
Bucks' Khris Middleton: Balanced outing in Game 4 loss
8h agoMiddleton finished with 25 points (9-22 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 7-8 FT), 10 rebounds, five assists and one steal over 40 minutes in Sunday's 126-113 loss to the Pacers in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Middleton once again tried to do all he could to help lead the shorthanded Bucks past the Pacers in Game 4, leading all players in Sunday's contest in rebounds while handing out a handful of assists and ending as one of three players with 20 or more points in a losing effort. He briefly exited the game due to an apparent leg injury but returned to the court shortly after, so it seems unlikely that his leg will be a concern moving forward. Assuming he's healthy, expect Middleton to continue to try and lead the Bucks in a win-or-go-home Game 5 in Milwaukee, especially if Giannis Antetokounmpo (calf) and Damian Lillard (Achilles) are unable to return for the elimination game.
-
Connor McDavid EDM C
Oilers' Connor McDavid: Adds power-play helper
3h agoMcDavid logged a power-play assist in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Kings in Game 4.
McDavid continues to be a big playmaker for the Oilers, with a goal and nine helpers through four playoff contests. He's earned eight of his 10 points with the man advantage, with the Oilers vastly overpowering the Kings while a man up. McDavid has added 10 shots on net, nine hits and a plus-1 rating in the postseason while playing in his usual top-line role.
-
Leon Draisaitl EDM C
Oilers' Leon Draisaitl: Sets up decisive goal
3h agoDraisaitl recorded a power-play assist, two shots on goal and three blocked shots in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Kings in Game 4.
Draisaitl has eight points over four playoff outings, and six of those points have come with the man advantage. He set up Evan Bouchard's second-period marker Sunday, which was enough to give the Oilers a 3-1 lead in this first-round series. While Draisaitl's 5-on-5 scoring is lacking, he continues to be a reliable scorer while seeing big minutes in the top six and on the power play.
-
Evan Bouchard EDM D
Oilers' Evan Bouchard: Scores lone goal in win
3h agoBouchard scored a power-play goal on two shots and blocked two shots in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Kings in Game 4.
Unlike previous games in this first-round series, offense was at a premium. Bouchard's goal was the only one of 13 Oilers shots to get by David Rittich, but Stuart Skinner made sure that was enough for Edmonton to go home ahead 3-1 in the series. The 24-year-old Bouchard has a goal, five helpers, 14 shots on net and nine blocked shots through four playoff outings, with four of his six points coming on the power play.
-
Stuart Skinner EDM G
Oilers' Stuart Skinner: Steals Game 4 win
3h agoSkinner recorded a 33-save shutout in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Kings in Game 4.
The Oilers looked like the worse team for the first time in the series, but Skinner stepped up to deliver his first playoff shutout and his third win in four first-round games. The 25-year-old was able to make an Evan Bouchard power-play goal hold for the win Sunday. Skinner has given up 11 goals over four games versus the Kings, and he'll likely be in goal against for Wednesday's Game 5.
-
David Rittich LA G
Kings' David Rittich: Loses low-scoring game
3h agoRittich stopped 12 of 13 shots in Sunday's 1-0 loss to the Oilers in Game 4.
Rittich got the start after Cam Talbot struggled in the first three games of the first-round series. Rittich was solid, though Game 4 was controlled by the Kings, who couldn't find a goal against Stuart Skinner. Rittich was 13-6-3 with a 2.15 GAA and a .921 save percentage over 24 regular-season appearances. The 31-year-old may get another chance to start in Game 5 on Wednesday, though the Kings are in must-win mode down 3-1 in the series.
-
Alexander Alexeyev WAS D
Capitals' Alexander Alexeyev: Lends assist Sunday
6h agoAlexeyev recorded an assist and two hits in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers in Game 4.
Alexeyev set up a Hendrix Lapierre goal in the second period. The helper ended Alexeyev's 19-game point drought, though it was encouraging to see him in the lineup regularly down the stretch. The 24-year-old blueliner had just three points with 48 hits, 59 blocked shots and a minus-8 rating over 39 regular-season contests. Alexeyev is under contract for 2024-25, so he'll have a chance to compete for a bottom-four role with the Capitals in training camp.
