24m agoPowell, Jalen Nailor and Trent Sherfield are the leading candidates for the No. 3 receiver role after the Vikings did not take a wide receiver in the 2024 draft, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
It was a mild surprise the Vikings didn't draft a wide receiver after the departure of K.J. Osborn in free agency (signed with New England), leaving Powell as the leading candidate for the No. 3 receiver role. The Vikings could add a veteran free agent later this spring to compete for the job. Whoever wins the role could get a significant number of targets early in the season with tight end T.J. Hockensen likely to miss several games in coming back from January surgery for a torn ACL.

1h agoWith the Colts not taking a running back in the 2024 draft, Sermon and Evan Hull are the primary backups to starter Jonathan Taylor, the Indianapolis Colts reports.
It was a mild surprise that the Colts didn't draft a running back or sign a prominent undrafted free agent to compete for the starting role. It's possible the Colts will sign a veteran free agent this spring for depth, but Sermon at this point could have a prominent backup role. Sermon rushed 35 times (including 17 carries in Week 15) for 160 yards to go along with three catches for 13 yards with Indy last season.

1h agoPierce and 2024 second-round draft pick Adonai Mitchell will compete on the outside for the No. 3 receiver role in training camp, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Pirece has been the starting deep threat for the Colts the last two seasons but without much production (just 32 receptions for 514 yards and two touchdowns last season). While that may have been due to poor quarterback play and a game plan that didn't throw the ball deep, but it has opened the door for a dynamic talent like Mitchell to compete for his job. Mitchell, the former Texas and Georgia receiver, dazzled at the NFL Scouting Combine (4.34-second 40-yard dash, 136-inch broad jump) following a productive end to his Longhorns career (55 catches for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns on 92 targets in 2023).

Daxton Hill CIN DBBengals' Dax Hill: Operating as cornerback in 2024
5h agoHill is expected to be a part of the Bengals' cornerback room in 2024, Jay Morrison of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Hill spent his sophomore campaign operating as a starting safety for the Bengals, recording 110 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, while also intercepting two passes and deflecting 11 others over 17 contests. Head coach Zac Taylor said Sunday that Hill will "be in the cornerback room" this year, which could mean a position change is in store. The team signed former Raven Geno Stone this offseason and could replace Hill at safety in 2024.

Michael Wiley 2005 RBMichael Wiley: Signing with Washington
5h agoWiley (thumb) is slated to sign with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent Sunday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Wiley wasn't selected during the 2024 NFL Draft but will have a chance to compete for a role with Washington during offseason activities. He sustained a thumb injury during the Senior Bowl in March, and it's unclear when he'll be back to full health.

1h agoLindor went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two stolen bases during Sunday's 4-2 win over the Cardinals.
Lindor notched his fourth homer of the last nine games, tagging Lance Lynn for a solo shot in the sixth frame. The shortstop also notched his 14th multi-steal game of his career, marking his second and third pilfers of the campaign. During his last nine appearances, Lindor is batting .306 with nine RBI and six runs scored.

Vientos entered the contest as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth, notching a single. He came back to the plate in the 11th, where he plated Harrison Bader on a game-winning two-run home run. While Vientos was called up to fill the hole left by Starling Marte's (personal) absence, he could earn a permanent big-league spot if he continues to rake.

1h agoLynn didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Mets, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out three batters.
Lynn' walked at least three batters for the third time in his last four starts. However, the only run charged against him came on a solo home run by Francisco Lindor in the sixth. During his last four appearances, Lynn owns a 2.05 ERA with 17 strikeouts and 11 walks over 22.0 innings. He's lined up for a start against the White Sox on Saturday.

1h agoYoung went 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases during Sunday's 12-9 victory over the Marlins.
Young's three hits were a season-high and represented his third consecutive multi-hit effort while he also stole two bags for the second-consecutive game. The young center fielder is up to 10 steals on the season, good for fifth in all of baseball despite accumulating only 60 at-bats and one walk. His average now stands at .375 with four doubles, seven RBI and 14 runs scored.

Jose Quintana NYM SPMets' Jose Quintana: Spins gem against STL
2h agoQuintana didn't factor into the decision, allowing one run on three hits and a walk across eight innings against St. Louis. He struck out three.
Quintana completed six innings for the first time all season, going eight frames for the first time since September of 2022. However, he was ineligible for the win, as the contest went into the extras tied 1-1. The veteran southpaw has yielded fewer than three earned runs in four of his six starts and has yet to exceed four strikeouts in 2024. He's lined up for a start Friday against Tampa Bay.

2h agoSenzel went 2-for-6 with two home runs and five RBI during Sunday's 12-9 win over the Marlins.
Senzel's two home runs came in consecutive innings with the two-run homer in the fourth cutting the lead to two, then the three-run blast in the fifth giving the Nationals a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The third baseman got off to a late start with the Nationals after fracturing his thumb prior to opening day but has found his groove over the last six games as each of his five hits during that stretch have cleared the outfield fence. The power is legit for Senzel, who was never quite able to put things together during his five seasons in Cincinnati but appears to be thriving in his first season with Washington.

3h agoTurner posted 29 points (10-17 FG, 7-9 3Pt, 2-6 FT), nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks over 38 minutes in Sunday's 126-113 win over the Bucks in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Turner continued his strong performance in the series against Milwaukee, taking advantage of the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo (calf) by putting together another well-rounded outing to help Indiana to a commanding 3-1 series lead. Turner led all players in Sunday's contest in threes made while leading the Pacers in scoring, rebounds and blocks in a near double-double showing. Turner has been dominant all series, posting at least 20 points and seven rebounds in three of his four postseason outings.

3h agoHaliburton finished with 24 points (8-16 FG, 5-12 3Pt, 3-3 FT), four rebounds four assists and one steal over 32 minutes in Sunday's 126-113 win over the Bucks in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Haliburton followed up his breakout performance in Friday's Game 3 by putting forth another strong outing in Game 4, connecting on a handful of threes while ending as one of two Pacers players with 20 or more points in a winning effort. Haliburton tallied his highest point total of the series against Milwaukee, also connecting on more than three shots from beyond the arc for the first time of the playoffs. Look for Haliburton to have another big game in a potential series-clinching Game 5 as he attempts to lead Indiana to the next round.

Pascal Siakam IND PFPacers' Pascal Siakam: Well-rounded showing in Game 4
3h agoSiakam notched 13 points (6-14 FG< 0-4 3Pt, 1-3 FT), nine rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block over 40 minutes in Sunday's 126-113 win over the Bucks in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Siakam has been outstanding for Indiana all series against Milwaukee, posting a well-rounded performance in Sunday's Game 4 while helping the Pacers take a commanding 3-1 series lead. Siakam struggled shooting a bit from the field, but he still reached double figures in scoring while ending one rebound and three assists short of a triple-double. Siakam has tallied at least 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists in two games this series, and we should expect him to continue to shine for Indiana in a potential series-clinching Game 5 in Milwaukee.

3h agoBeasley tallied 20 points (8-12 FG, 4-7 3Pt), three rebounds and two assists over 34 minutes in Sunday's 126-113 loss to the Pacers in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Beasley entered the starting lineup Sunday with Damian Lillard (Achilles) being added to Milwaukee's inactive list, connecting on a team-high mark from three. Beasley reached double figures in scoring for the first time of the postseason, connecting on at least three threes in two straight outings. If Lillard is unable to return in a win-or-go-home Game 5, look for Beasley to remain in the starting lineup or at least have a large role in the rotation for the Bucks.

Lopez led all Bucks players in scoring in Sunday's loss while connecting on a trio of threes and ending one rebound shy of a double-double in a balanced performance. Lopez has stepped up as the leader in the paint for Milwaukee during the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo (calf), reaching double figures in all four postseason games while finishing with his highest scoring and rebound marks of the series thus far.

Khris Middleton MIL SFBucks' Khris Middleton: Balanced outing in Game 4 loss
3h agoMiddleton finished with 25 points (9-22 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 7-8 FT), 10 rebounds, five assists and one steal over 40 minutes in Sunday's 126-113 loss to the Pacers in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Middleton once again tried to do all he could to help lead the shorthanded Bucks past the Pacers in Game 4, leading all players in Sunday's contest in rebounds while handing out a handful of assists and ending as one of three players with 20 or more points in a losing effort. He briefly exited the game due to an apparent leg injury but returned to the court shortly after, so it seems unlikely that his leg will be a concern moving forward. Assuming he's healthy, expect Middleton to continue to try and lead the Bucks in a win-or-go-home Game 5 in Milwaukee, especially if Giannis Antetokounmpo (calf) and Damian Lillard (Achilles) are unable to return for the elimination game.

Alexeyev set up a Hendrix Lapierre goal in the second period. The helper ended Alexeyev's 19-game point drought, though it was encouraging to see him in the lineup regularly down the stretch. The 24-year-old blueliner had just three points with 48 hits, 59 blocked shots and a minus-8 rating over 39 regular-season contests. Alexeyev is under contract for 2024-25, so he'll have a chance to compete for a bottom-four role with the Capitals in training camp.

Alexei Protas WAS CCapitals' Aliaksei Protas: Nabs assist in Game 4
1h agoProtas posted an assist in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers in Game 4.
Protas picked up two assists, eight shots on net, four hits and a plus-1 rating over four playoff contests. The 23-year-old forward took a step up in 2023-24 with 29 points, 113 shots on net and 49 blocked shots over 78 regular-season outings. Protas should continue to fill a full-time NHL role in 2024-25 after signing a five-year extension with the Capitals back in January.

1h agoStrome recorded an assist and two shots on goal in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers in Game 4.
Strome helped out on a Martin Fehervary goal in the first period. The helper was Strome's second point in four playoff outings, to go with nine shots on net, six hits and a minus-1 rating. The 27-year-old center often saw top-six minutes in 2023-24, earning a career-high 67 points (22 on the power play) with 169 shots on net, 61 blocked shots and a minus-13 rating over 82 contests.

Martin Fehervary WAS DCapitals' Martin Fehervary: Tallies in Sunday's loss
1h agoFehervary scored a goal on three shots and added six hits in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers in Game 4.
Fehervary ended up with three points, eight shots on net, 16 hits and nine blocked shots over four playoff outings. He's typically more known for his defensive work, so this shouldn't be seen as a sign of a potential 2024-25 breakout. The 24-year-old blueliner put up 16 points, 188 hits, 109 blocked shots and a minus-7 rating in 66 regular-season appearances this year.

Hendrix Lapierre WAS CCapitals' Hendrix Lapierre: Nets goal in season-ending loss
1h agoLapierre scored a goal on two shots, added four hits and blocked two shots in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers in Game 4.
Lapierre carved through the Rangers' defense to score in the second period, ending an 18-game goal drought. While he tied the game at 2-2, the Capitals were unable to pull ahead and ultimately lost the game and the first-round series. The 22-year-old center took some strides in 2024-25 with eight goals, 14 assists, 51 shots on net and a minus-1 rating in 51 regular-season outings as well as two points over four playoff games. Lapierre should be able to push for a full-time NHL role in 2024-25.

Charlie Lindgren WAS GCapitals' Charlie Lindgren: Falls short in Game 4
1h agoLindgren allowed three goals on 22 shots in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers in Game 4. The fourth goal was an empty-netter.
Lindgren went 0-4 in the playoffs, ending the Capitals' postseason run in the first round. He allowed 14 goals on 103 shots during those four contests, putting a sour taste on an otherwise solid campaign that saw him post a 25-16-7 record, a 2.67 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 50 regular-season appearances. Lindgren is under contract for one more season, so he should have at least a timeshare role on lock for 2024-25.
