Khalil Herbert CHI RBBears' Khalil Herbert: Could be moved
17m agoWith D'Andre Swift signed this offseason and Roschon Johnson entering his second season, Herbert is viewed as potential trade bait, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Herbert is entering the final year of his rookie deal that is set to pay him a non-guaranteed $1.055 million salary, and the coaching staff is high on Johnson headed into his second season after he was taken in the fourth round of the NFL Draft last year. Swift inked a three-year, $24 million deal in March. After leading the NFL averaging 5.7 yards per carry in 2022, Herbert battled ankle and back issues last year, missing five games on injured reserve in the middle of the season. Travis Homer is also on the roster as a special teams ace. Herbert doesn't play special teams.

1h agoHockenson (knee) is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn right ACL and MCL, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
Hockenson suffered his knee injury the day after Christmas. According to Lewis, even though Hockenson is making quick progress, the Vikings don't plan to rush him back, and the tight end's status for Week 1 remains in question. There's chance he opens the season on reserve/PUP. If so, veterans Josh Oliver and Johnny Mundt are next up on the depth chart.

Alijah Vera-Tucker NYJ OGJets' Alijah Vera-Tucker: Will play right guard
1h agoVera-Tucker (Achilles) said it's "comforting" to know he'll be sticking at one position in 2024 as the Jets' right guard, Randy Lange of the team's website reports.
This is confirmation that Vera-Tucker will kick back inside this coming season after bouncing all over the offensive line throughout his first three seasons, including right tackle in 2023 prior to sustaining a torn Achilles that he continues to rebound from. Barring injury, the Jets' offensive line appears set from left to right, including LT Tyron Smith, LG John Simpson, C Joe Tippmann, Vera-Tucker and RT Morgan Moses.

2h agoWalker is expected to remain the No. 1 running back for the 2024 season after the Seahawks didn't select a running back in the NFL Draft.
The Seahawks did sign George Holani and TaMerik Williams as undrafted free agents, per Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic, but neither player presents a real threat to Walker's job. While Walker and 2023 second-round pick Zach Charbonnet split snaps last season, Walker was still the clear No. 1 back with 219 carries for 905 yards (4.1 YPC) and eight touchdowns. He added 29 receptions for 259 yards and a score. The Seahawks added three linemen in the draft, including third-round pick Christian Haynes, so they're hoping their offensive line will show more consistency this year.

15h agoJones (knee) said Wednesday that he's been running and cutting during his rehab from a torn right ACL, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Jones went on to say he's "doing everything," and the plan remains for him to be ready for training camp. The veteran QB tore his right ACL last November and also dealt with neck issues once again, though Jones said he's over that injury. The Giants didn't use a draft pick on a quarterback this offseason, only swapping out veteran backup Tyrod Taylor for Drew Lock in free agency. Jones should get every shot to remain the Giants' starter despite a dreadful 2023.

16h agoThe Cowboys declined Lance's 2025 fifth-year option, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
This was a no-brainer, as Lance has been a mega-bust to this point in his career after the 49ers traded up to select Lance at No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. He didn't play a single snap for Dallas last season after the team traded for him prior to Week 1. Lance will compete with Cooper Rush for backup duties behind Dak Prescott.

Leody Taveras TEX CFRangers' Leody Taveras: Gets rest day Thursday

Taveras appears to be getting a routine off day as Washington and Texas conclude their series with a day game after a night game. The 25-year-old had started in each of the Rangers' last five contests, recording at least one hit in each of those games to bring his average up to .229 for the season.

John Means BAL SPOrioles' John Means: Slated for season debut Saturday

Means was officially activated from the 15-day injured list Wednesday and now the Orioles have revealed the date for the left-hander's season debut. While Means pitched poorly for most of his rehab assignment, he was excellent in his final outing with Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, striking out eight over seven shutout innings while allowing just one hit and one walk. The southpaw got his pitch count up to 95 in that start, so he shouldn't have any workload concerns Saturday against the Reds.

Though he's seen his playing time in the infield pick up of late after second baseman Jackson Holliday was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk last Friday, Urias will head to the bench Thursday after starting at third base in three of the previous four games. Jordan Westburg will occupy the hot corner Thursday, opening up a spot at the keystone for Jorge Mateo.

13m agoRed Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Yoshida might require surgery on his injured left thumb, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Yoshida was placed on the injured list Wednesday with what has been termed a left thumb strain. Cora noted Thursday that the medical staff is still gathering information regarding the injury before a decision is made on next steps for Yoshida, but it appears surgery is one of the possibilities. More clarity on the designated hitter's status should be available by the weekend.

The lefty-hitting O'Hearn will head to the bench for the series finale while the Yankees bring southpaw Carlos Rodon to the bump. Adley Rutschman will receive a day off behind the plate and will fill in for O'Hearn as the Orioles' designated hitter.

22m agoHays (calf) said that he's been able to engage in a running program the past few days and plans to hit Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Manager Brandon Hyde implied Monday that Hays had made limited progress in his recovery from a left calf strain, but the outfielder struck a much more optimistic tone when he talked about where he stood in his rehab program Thursday. Hays admitted he's unsure whether he'll need a rehab assignment prior to being activated from the 10-day injured list, as the Orioles could just allow him to get some competitive at-bats in during simulated games. Regardless, Hays likely won't be in store for an everyday role whenever he's activated, as rookie Colton Cowser appears to have established himself as Baltimore's top option in left field.

25m agoPorzingis (calf) will likely remain sidelined for the Celtics' second-round series in the Eastern Conference playoffs, Chris Haynes of Turner Sports reports.
Porzingis sustained a calf injury in Game 4 of Boston's first-round series and was unavailable for Wednesday's Game 5 as the Celtics took down the Heat to advance to the second round. He's been diagnosed with a right soleus strain and was expected to miss several games, and it appears likely that his absence will span the entirety of the second round. However, the Celtics hope that Porzingis will be able to return if the team advances to the Eastern Conference Finals, and the 28-year-old will rest and rehab in the coming days.

White co-led the Celtics in scoring Wednesday alongside Jaylen Brown, and he enjoyed playing a more prominent role on offense with Kristaps Porzingis (calf) sidelined and with Jayson Tatum taking a bit of a step back on the scoring side of things. White reached the 20-point mark in three of his five appearances in the series against the Heat, and he should remain an offensive menace in the Eastern Conference Semifinals regardless of whether the Celtics face the Magic or the Cavaliers.

3h agoBrown finished Wednesday's 118-84 victory over Miami in Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with 25 points (11-19 FG, 1-7 3Pt, 2-5 FT), six rebounds and two assists over 26 minutes.
Brown was one of two Boston players who reached the 25-point mark Wednesday, with Derrick White being the other, but he didn't do much outside of scoring. Brown scored 20-plus points in three of the five outings in the series against the Heat, and he should continue to play a prominent role on offense in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, regardless of the opponent, especially if Kristaps Porzingis (calf) remains sidelined for a prolonged stretch.

Jayson Tatum BOS PFCeltics' Jayson Tatum: Another double-double
3h agoTatum totaled 16 points (4-9 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 6-9 FT), 12 rebounds, three assists and one block in 32 minutes during Wednesday's 118-84 victory over the Heat in Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
There's no doubt that Tatum is the undisputed go-to player on offense for the Celtics, and the star forward can take over a game if needed every time the team needs him to do so. He was active on both ends of the court in the series against the Heat, however, recording four double-doubles in five games while also reaching the 20-point plateau four times. He averaged 21.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game against the Heat and will now aim to lead Boston in the Conference Semifinals, where the Celtics will take on either the Cavaliers or the Magic.

Nikola Jovic MIA PFHeat's Nikola Jovic: Decent output in playoff exit
3h agoJovic ended with eight points (3-7 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT), seven rebounds and four assists over 28 minutes during Wednesday's 118-84 loss to the Celtics in Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Jovic was forced to embrace a bigger role in the second half of the season and was a permanent fixture in the starting unit since mid-February. While he had some strong performances here and there, he lacked consistency on a game-to-game basis, and he was unable to become a reliable offensive alternative when the Heat needed him, especially in games where they were shorthanded. It remains to be seen if Jovic will remain a regular starter for the Heat next season. but it's worth noting he averaged 9.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game across 33 starts since the beginning of February, counting both the regular season and the playoffs.

Adebayo had to shoulder a bigger load on offense due to the absences of Jimmy Butler (knee) and Terry Rozier (neck), and for the most part, the star big man delivered. He scored 20 or more points in each game of the series while posting two double-doubles. Adebayo averaged 19.4 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per contest between the Play-In Tournament and the series against the Celtics (seven games).

22m agoWoll was the first goaltender off the ice at morning skate, according to Patrick Friolet of RDS,ca, indicating he will defend the home crease versus Boston on Thursday.
Woll has been sensational versus the Bruins in the postseason, giving up one goal on 28 shots in a 2-1 overtime win Tuesday in Game 5, as well as stopping all five shots in Game 4, after replacing Ilya Samsonov to start the third period. Woll has seen action in 36 regular-season games in his NHL career, but he looked like a seasoned veteran in beating the Bruins on Tuesday.

Hyman put the Oilers ahead 4-2 in the final minute of the second period, deflecting a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins shot past David Rittich for the eventual game-winning goal in the 4-3 series-clinching victory. Hyman's seven goals are tied with Valeri Nichushkin for the league lead so far in the playoffs. He's picked up where he left off in the regular season, where he tallied a career-high 54 goals and 77 points in 80 games.

1h agoMcDavid logged a pair of assists in Wednesday's 4-3 win over Los Angeles.
McDavid set up Leon Draisaitl's game-tying power-play goal midway through the second period before adding another helper on Draisaitl's go-ahead tally just a few minutes later. McDavid recorded at least one assist in all five games in the series, totaling a league-high 12 points (one goal, 11 assists) so far this postseason.

Kempe cut the Kings' deficit to one goal 17:42 into the third period, deflecting a Matt Roy shot past Stuart Skinner, though Los Angeles would ultimately come up short as Edmonton took the series in five games. Still, it was a strong effort from Kempe, who tallied four goals and five points in the series. He posted a career-high 75 points (28 goals, 47 assists) in 77 regular-season contests.

Bouchard set up all three of Edmonton's second-period goals, including a Leon Draisaitl marker on the power-play, in the 4-3 series-clinching victory. The 24-year-old Bouchard has nine points (one goal, eight assists) through five games in the playoffs, tying Cale Makar for most among defensemen. Bouchard had a breakout regular season, tallying 18 goals and 82 points, both career highs, across 81 games.

Leon Draisaitl EDM COilers' Leon Draisaitl: Two goals to clinch series
1h agoDraisaitl scored a pair of goals on a team-high six shots in Wednesday's 4-3 victory over the Kings.
Draisaitl tied the game 2-2 midway through the second period with a power-play goal before putting Edmonton ahead just a few minutes later with a second tally, beating David Rittich with a one-timer off a Connor McDavid feed. It was an excellent start to the post-season for Draisaitl -- the 28-year-old center tallied five goals and 10 points in the Oilers' decisive five-game series victory.
