Gabe Davis JAC WRJaguars' Gabe Davis: Fellow WR let go
1h agoWith Zay Jones having been released by the Jaguars, the team's wide receiver corps is now led by returnee Christian Kirk along with Davis and 2024 first-rounder Brian Thomas, Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union reports.
With both Jones and Calvin Ridley -- who led the team with 1,016 receiving yards last season -- no longer on the roster, Kirk, Davis and Thomas form a new clear-cut top trio, with Parker Washington, Tim Jones, Devin Duvernay and Elijah Cooks in the depth WR mix. With the Bills in 2023, Davis recorded 45 catches (on 81 targets) for 746 yards and seven TDs in 17 regular-season outings, and in his new locale the 25-year-old's fantasy upside hinges largely on what sort of volume he sees relative to the promising Thomas, who was viewed by most as the No. 4 wideout prospect available in last week's draft.

Deebo Samuel SF WR49ers' Deebo Samuel: Likely staying with team this year
1h agoSamuel wasn't traded during the 2024 NFL Draft and now seems likely to stay with the 49ers for at least one more season, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports.
The 49ers selected WRs in Rounds 1 (Ricky Pearsall) and 4 (Jacob Cowing), and while they reportedly fielded trade offers for both Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, nothing ever came to fruition. It now seems more likely that the WR group will undergo significant changes next offseason, at which point Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings are scheduled for unrestricted free agency and Samuel will have just one year remaining on his contract (with no guaranteed money). A contract extension for Aiyuk in the coming weeks/months would further increase speculation about Samuel eventually being the odd man out.

Jonathon Brooks CAR RBPanthers' Jonathon Brooks: On track for camp
1h agoBrooks (knee) remains on track to be cleared for training camp, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Brooks said the ACL tear he suffered in November didn't come with any damage to other ligaments -- a factor that likely contributed to the Panthers' confidence making him the first RB selected in the 2024 NFL Draft (46th overall). He's begun running and plans to resume cutting soon, with the intention of participating at the start of training camp in late July, shortly after his 21st birthday. Brooks didn't play much at Texas until Bijan Robinson left for the NFL, but once he got his chance the results were impressive, with Brooks recording 1,139 rushing yards and 286 receiving yards in 11 games last season. In Carolina, he joins a backfield with veterans Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders, though it isn't clear if the latter will have a role after his poor showing last season.

2h agoThe Broncos don't plan to pick up the fifth-year option in Wilson's contract, Jeff Legwold of ESPN reports.
Wilson, who the Jets took with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, joined the Broncos in a trade with New York leading up to this year's draft. With his new team not in line to pick up his fifth-year option -- which would have been for a guaranteed $22.4 million -- the 24 year-old is in a position to become a free agent next March. For now, Wilson is slated to compete with first-round rookie Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham -- who started Denver's final two games of the 2023 regular season -- for the Week 1 starting assignment. While Nix is presumably viewed as the franchise's long-term answer at QB, in the short term, slotting at the position is up for grabs in advance of training camp.

2h agoRichardson (shoulder) is throwing at spring practices and looks to be healthy, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Coach Shane Steichen said in March that he expected Richardson to be ready for OTAs in May and June. It looks like that's coming to fruition, though the QB won't necessarily be a full participant in all activities, having undergone surgery on his throwing shoulder in October. He resumed throwing in February and is the unquestioned QB1 for an offense that just added WR Adonai Mitchell in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Ezekiel Elliott DAL RBCowboys' Ezekiel Elliott: Gets $1.75 million guaranteed
3h agoElliott's one-year, $2 million contract with the Cowboys includes $1.75 million guaranteed, and he can earn up to $1 million more via incentives, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
All of the incentives require Dallas making the playoffs, with the other parts entailing Elliott playing more than half the team's snaps ($500k), scoring 10 touchdowns ($250k) or reaching 1,100 yards from scrimmage ($250k). He did all three of those things in 2021, and two of the three in his most recent season with the Cowboys (2022). A one-year sojourn to New England proved less productive, though Elliott handled some huge workloads late in the season after Rhamondre Stevenson suffered a high-ankle injury, averaging 14.8 carries and 5.2 catches over the Patriots' final six games. The Cowboys probably won't call on him that often, even with their other backfield options -- Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, Royce Freeman, Malik Davis and Snoop Conner -- being less than stellar. The Cowboys didn't draft a running back in April, and none of their veterans besides Elliott has ever run for more than 521 yards in a season.

Rooker will get a day off after he started in each of the Athletics' last 11 games since being reinstated from the 10-day injured list April 19. With Rooker getting a breather Wednesday, Shea Langeliers will get a day off behind the plate and will serve as Oakland's designated hitter.

Hernaiz will draw his seventh straight start Wednesday, with three of his last four starts having come at shortstop. He appears to have moved ahead of Nick Allen on the depth chart at shortstop while recording five hits in 17 at-bats to go with four walks since he was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas last Thursday.

After making five consecutive starts at the keystone and going 2-for-13, Schuemann now finds himself on the bench for the second game in a row, both of which have come against right-handed starting pitchers. He looks as though he'll play second fiddle to Abraham Toro at second base while Zack Gelof (oblique) is on the injured list.

Joshua Lowe TB RFRays' Josh Lowe: Resuming rehab assignment
21m agoLowe (oblique/hamstring) will resume a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Lowe had been set to return from his oblique strain last weekend but was delayed after experiencing right hamstring tightness in a game at Durham. However, the feeling is that it was just a minor setback and he has been cleared to return to game action. Lowe will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis at Durham to determine when he can rejoin the Rays' active roster.

24m agoCooper is expected to be fine after exiting Tuesday's game versus the Giants following a hit-by-pitch on the right wrist, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
It's not clear whether Cooper required any imaging, but either way it sounds like he escaped with just a contusion. The Red Sox are reportedly closing in on a major-league contract with Dominic Smith, who could share time at first base with Cooper while Triston Casas (ribs) is out.

LeVert is in the midst of a tough series, and although the Cavaliers were missing Jarrett Allen (ribs), the team opted to turn to Isaac Okoro and Marcus Morris rather than LeVert. Through five games, the guard has averaged only 7.2 points, 2.0 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 0.8 three-pointers on 33.3 percent shooting.

The Cavaliers were missing Jarrett Allen (ribs), and while Isaac Okoro drew the start, Morris stepped into the rotation and made a massive impact. Morris had a total of 15 minutes in this series before Tuesday, so credit to him for staying ready. For now, it remains unclear if Allen will be ready to return for Game 6 in Orlando on Friday.

The Cavaliers were missing Jarrett Allen (ribs) for this game, so Mobley shifted to center and produced a masterclass on the defensive end. His emphatic block on Franz Wagner's game-tying layup attempt at the end of regulation secured the win for Cleveland, giving the Cavaliers a 3-2 series lead.

2h agoCarter closed Tuesday's 104-103 loss to the Cavaliers in Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with seven points (3-6 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 1-2 FT), 11 rebounds, two assists, three blocks and one steal across 33 minutes.
Despite a quiet night offensively, Carter still had a big impact on the game, particularly on the boards and the defensive end. However, he's had a tough series overall, averaging just 5.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists through the first five games.

Suggs wasn't able to generate much on the offensive end, and he has the unenviable task of trying to slow Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell in this series. Despite some solid counting stats, Suggs hasn't played to his full potential yet, as he's hitting just 24.0 percent from beyond the arc in his last five games.

Banchero's 39 points mark a new career high in the postseason, and this was a terrific bounce-back performance after he was held to nine points in Game 4 on Saturday. Banchero has been terrific in his first career playoff series, posting averages of 24.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.2 three-pointers through five games.

Brett Pesce CAR DHurricanes' Brett Pesce: Might play in second round
12m agoPesce (lower body) is no longer using a walking boot and might be able to return during Carolina's upcoming second-round series against the Rangers, Chip Alexander of The Raleigh News & Observer reports Wednesday.
Pesce had three goals, 13 points, 20 PIM, 25 hits and 113 blocks in 70 regular-season outings. The 29-year-old is likely to serve in a top-four capacity once he's healthy.

DeAngelo played in the last three games for the Canes while Brett Pesce (lower body) was unavailable. For now, DeAngelo should be in the lineup for Game 1, whenever it is announced, but will likely be relegated to the press box once Pesce, who is expected to return at some point versus New York, is cleared to play.

Peeke had a goal, 10 points, 14 PIM, 88 hits and 78 blocks in 38 contests between Columbus and Boston during the regular season. His timetable rules him out for the remainder of the first round, but Peeke might be an option later in the playoffs if the Bruins advance. Boston holds a 3-2 series lead over Toronto heading into Game 6 on Thursday.

Carlo has a goal, a plus-2 rating, four PIM, nine hits and 11 blocks in five playoff contests this year. He missed the overtime period in Boston's 2-1 loss to Toronto in Game 5 on Tuesday and wasn't on the ice for Wednesday's practice, but coach Jim Montgomery has nevertheless stated that the defenseman will be good to remain in the lineup versus the Leafs.

While Skjei remains goalless in his last 11 outings, the blueliner has tallied an impressive 10 helpers over that stretch, including three with the man advantage. With injuries pilling up among the Canes' defensemen, the 30-year-old Skjei could see an uptick in both even strength and power-play minutes heading into the next round of the playoffs.

30m agoBarzal notched a pair of assists in a 6-3 Game 5 loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday.
Barzal put up decent numbers in the postseason, recording two goals and three assists in five games. Still, it wasn't enough to get the Isles past Carolina and into the next round of the playoffs. During the regular season, the 26-year-old center averaged a point per game, a scoring rate he hasn't achieved since the 2017-18 campaign when he was a rookie.
