Bailey Zappe NE QBPatriots' Bailey Zappe: In line to compete for depth slot
2m agoWith veteran newcomer Jacoby Brissett and 2024 first-rounder Drake Maye viewed as roster locks, Zappe figures to compete with rookie sixth-rounder Joe Milton and Nathan Rourke for slotting on the Patriots' depth chart, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports.
Alternatively, Callahan suggests that with five QBs in the mix the Patriots could look to move Zappe, who drew six regular-season starts for the team in 2023. For now, however, Zappe remains with the organization that selected him 137th overall in the 2022 draft. In any case, even if the 25-year-old ends up sticking around as a depth option, he won't have a path to a potential starting role, as long as Brissett and Maye are healthy. With that in mind, Callahan suggests that Zappe could find himself on the radar of other teams seeking signal-caller options once injuries hit.

Khalil Herbert CHI RBBears' Khalil Herbert: Could be moved
38m agoWith D'Andre Swift signed this offseason and Roschon Johnson entering his second season, Herbert is viewed as potential trade bait, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Herbert is entering the final year of his rookie deal that is set to pay him a non-guaranteed $1.055 million salary, and the coaching staff is high on Johnson headed into his second season after he was taken in the fourth round of the NFL Draft last year. Swift inked a three-year, $24 million deal in March. After leading the NFL averaging 5.7 yards per carry in 2022, Herbert battled ankle and back issues last year, missing five games on injured reserve in the middle of the season. Travis Homer is also on the roster as a special teams ace. Herbert doesn't play special teams.

1h agoHockenson (knee) is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn right ACL and MCL, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
Hockenson suffered his knee injury the day after Christmas. According to Lewis, even though Hockenson is making quick progress, the Vikings don't plan to rush him back, and the tight end's status for Week 1 remains in question. There's chance he opens the season on reserve/PUP. If so, veterans Josh Oliver and Johnny Mundt are next up on the depth chart.

Alijah Vera-Tucker NYJ OGJets' Alijah Vera-Tucker: Will play right guard in 2024
2h agoVera-Tucker (Achilles) said Wednesday it's "comforting" to know he'll be sticking at one position in 2024 as the Jets' starting right guard, Randy Lange of the team's website reports.
Vera-Tucker will kick back inside this coming season after bouncing all over the offensive line throughout his first three years in the NFL. He served as the Jets' starting right tackle for five games in 2023 prior to sustaining a torn Achilles' tendon, but he said his rehab is going well, and the expectation is that he'll be ready to go for the start of the 2024 campaign. Barring further injuries or additions, the Jets' offensive line appears set from left to right. Tyron Smith and John Simpson will start on the left side, Joe Tippmann, will start at center, and Vera-Tucker and Morgan Moses will start on the right side.

2h agoWalker is expected to remain the No. 1 running back for the 2024 season after the Seahawks didn't select a running back in the NFL Draft.
The Seahawks did sign George Holani and TaMerik Williams as undrafted free agents, per Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic, but neither player presents a real threat to Walker's job. While Walker and 2023 second-round pick Zach Charbonnet split snaps last season, Walker was still the clear No. 1 back with 219 carries for 905 yards (4.1 YPC) and eight touchdowns. He added 29 receptions for 259 yards and a score. The Seahawks added three linemen in the draft, including third-round pick Christian Haynes, so they're hoping their offensive line will show more consistency this year.

Daniel Jones NYG QBGiants' Daniel Jones: Running and cutting in ACL rehab
16h agoJones (knee) said Wednesday that he's been running and making cuts during his rehab from a torn right ACL, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Jones went on to say he's "doing everything," and the plan remains for him to be fully cleared for the start of training camp. The veteran quarterback tore his ACL last November and also dealt with neck issues, though Jones said he's over the latter injury. The Giants didn't use a draft pick on a quarterback this offseason, only swapping out veteran backup Tyrod Taylor for Drew Lock in free agency. Jones should get every opportunity to remain the Giants' starter in 2024, despite a dreadful, injury-shortened 2023 campaign.

Albert Suarez BAL SPOrioles' Albert Suarez: Shifted to bullpen
14m agoSuarez has been moved to the Orioles' bullpen, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Suarez was excellent in three starts for the Orioles, collecting a 2.35 ERA and 15:3 K:BB across 15.1 innings of work. It's possible he'll be needed for more starts down the line, but with Kyle Bradish and John Means set to rejoin the rotation, Suarez will shift to a relief role for now.

Cole Irvin BAL SPOrioles' Cole Irvin: Sticks in rotation
15m agoIrvin is slated to start Friday's game against the Reds in Cincinnati, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
The Orioles returned Kyle Bradish (forearm) and John Means (elbow) from the 15-day injured list, but with Grayson Rodriguez (shoulder) landing on the IL on Wednesday, Baltimore will only have to move one starter out of the rotation to accommodate the two new arrivals. At least for this week, the Orioles are opting to keep Irvin in the rotation over Albert Suarez, who is now being listed as a reliever after he had posted a 2.35 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 15.1 innings over his three starts with Baltimore. Irvin's season-long numbers (3.49 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB in 28.1 innings) aren't quite as sparkling as Suarez's, but the southpaw has been excellent his last two times out, blanking the Royals on the road over 6.2 innings on April 21 before spinning seven shutout innings against the Athletics last Saturday. He could have a tougher time keeping the scoreless stretch going this weekend, taking on the Reds in one of baseball's more hitter-friendly parks.

22m agoYoung (back) was sent to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday to begin a rehab assignment, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Young has been out all season while recovering from low back disc degeneration, but he's finally ready to test things out in game action. The left-handed reliever is on the 60-day injured list, so he won't be eligible to return until late May.

TJ Friedl CIN CFReds' TJ Friedl: Cleared for rehab assignment
24m agoFriedl (wrist) was sent to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday to begin a rehab assignment, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Friedl suffered a small fracture of the distal radius of his right wrist back in mid-March, but he's finally made enough progress in order to be cleared to play in games. Given how much time he's missed, Friedl will likely require a good number of rehab at-bats in the minors before returning from the 10-day injured list. The Reds' outfield situation is already crowded, but Friedl should play on a regular basis -- at least against right-handed pitching -- once he's activated.

Brooks Raley NYM RPMets' Brooks Raley: Needs more recovery time
25m agoMets manager Carlos Mendoza said Thursday that Raley (elbow) is no longer on track to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. "We're going to take it slow [with Raley]," Mendoza said.
Raley was placed on the shelf April 21 with left elbow inflammation, and while Mendoza didn't indicate that the southpaw has experienced any setbacks since being shut down, he doesn't seem to be progressing as quickly as anticipated, either. He'll be sent in for further imaging in the coming days as a precaution, and he could start ramping up his throwing program thereafter. Raley was one of the Mets' top setup men in 2023 and had gotten off to a strong start to 2024 before landing on the IL, striking out nine over seven scoreless innings while allowing just five baserunners and collecting four holds and one win.

Taveras appears to be getting a routine off day as Washington and Texas conclude their series with a day game after a night game. The 25-year-old had started in each of the Rangers' last five contests, recording at least one hit in each of those games to bring his average up to .229 for the season.

7m agoAntetokounmpo (calf) is working to try to make a return for Thursday's Game 6 against the Pacers, but it's unclear whether he'll be able to do so, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.
Both Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard (Achilles) are attempting to return to action as the Bucks try to keep their season alive Thursday. However, while Lillard has been upgraded to questionable, Antetokounmpo remains doubtful for now. Antetokounmpo's potential return would give the Bucks a significant boost on the road in Game 6, but it's also possible he'd face some limitations after missing the last eight matchups.

11m agoLillard (Achilles) has been upgraded to questionable for Thursday's Game 6 against the Pacers, Jeremiah Johnson of Bally Sports Indiana reports.
Lillard was initially deemed doubtful for a third consecutive matchup, but he's trending in the right direction ahead of Thursday's tipoff. If he's able to return to action, it'd provide a significant boost for the Bucks, who are attempting to keep their season alive by forcing a Game 7. If Lillard is unable to suit up, Malik Beasley will likely remain in the starting lineup, while Khris Middleton would likely be a centerpiece for Milwaukee.

1h agoPorzingis (calf) will likely remain sidelined for the Celtics' second-round series in the Eastern Conference playoffs, Chris Haynes of Turner Sports reports.
Porzingis sustained a calf injury in Game 4 of Boston's first-round series and was unavailable for Wednesday's Game 5 as the Celtics took down the Heat to advance to the second round. He's been diagnosed with a right soleus strain and was expected to miss several games, and it appears likely that his absence will span the entirety of the second round. However, the Celtics hope that Porzingis will be able to return if the team advances to the Eastern Conference Finals, and the 28-year-old will rest and rehab in the coming days.

White co-led the Celtics in scoring Wednesday alongside Jaylen Brown, and he enjoyed playing a more prominent role on offense with Kristaps Porzingis (calf) sidelined and with Jayson Tatum taking a bit of a step back on the scoring side of things. White reached the 20-point mark in three of his five appearances in the series against the Heat, and he should remain an offensive menace in the Eastern Conference Semifinals regardless of whether the Celtics face the Magic or the Cavaliers.

3h agoBrown finished Wednesday's 118-84 victory over Miami in Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with 25 points (11-19 FG, 1-7 3Pt, 2-5 FT), six rebounds and two assists over 26 minutes.
Brown was one of two Boston players who reached the 25-point mark Wednesday, with Derrick White being the other, but he didn't do much outside of scoring. Brown scored 20-plus points in three of the five outings in the series against the Heat, and he should continue to play a prominent role on offense in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, regardless of the opponent, especially if Kristaps Porzingis (calf) remains sidelined for a prolonged stretch.

Jayson Tatum BOS PFCeltics' Jayson Tatum: Another double-double
3h agoTatum totaled 16 points (4-9 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 6-9 FT), 12 rebounds, three assists and one block in 32 minutes during Wednesday's 118-84 victory over the Heat in Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
There's no doubt that Tatum is the undisputed go-to player on offense for the Celtics, and the star forward can take over a game if needed every time the team needs him to do so. He was active on both ends of the court in the series against the Heat, however, recording four double-doubles in five games while also reaching the 20-point plateau four times. He averaged 21.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game against the Heat and will now aim to lead Boston in the Conference Semifinals, where the Celtics will take on either the Cavaliers or the Magic.

Kevin Gravel CGY DPredators' Kevin Gravel: Called up from minors
5m agoGravel was elevated from AHL Milwaukee on Thursday.
Gravel's promotion doesn't bode well for the availability of Luke Schenn (illness) or Spencer Stastney (upper body) for Game 6 against the Canucks on Friday. In the minors this season, the 32-year-old Gravel has contributed just 10 points in 63 outings, so fantasy players shouldn't be expecting him to produce offensively even if he does get into the lineup for Game 6.

Heinen is considered day-to-day and could return as early as Saturday, if Game 7 is required. Heinen will be replaced in the lineup by John Beecher, while Justin Brazeau will take his spot on the second power play.

12m agoMcMann (lower body) is making strides in his recovery but is not close to returning to action, Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun reports Thursday.
At this point, McMann should probably be considered out indefinitely with his return to action seemingly a long way off. The 27-year-old center has already been sidelined for the club's last seven contests due to his lower-body injury. If he does return in the postseason, McMann would likely challenge for a top-six role, perhaps unseating Matthew Knies.

Auston Matthews TOR CMaple Leafs' Auston Matthews: Not playing Thursday
16m agoPer Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun, Matthews (illness) has been ruled out of the lineup Thursday versus Boston, according to coach Sheldon Keefe.
Matthews was on the ice Thursday for 30 minutes before the morning skate, but did not participate during regular practice. The superstar center was pulled from action between the second and third periods Saturday, and was unable to play in Game 5 on Tuesday. Matthews had a goal and two assists in Game 2, but he has not had a point in any of the three other games he has played in during the playoffs. The hope is that he will be good to go for Game 7, if Toronto can extend the series with a win Thursday.

43m agoWoll was the first goaltender off the ice at morning skate, according to Patrick Friolet of RDS,ca, indicating he will defend the home crease versus Boston on Thursday.
Woll has been sensational versus the Bruins in the postseason, giving up one goal on 28 shots in a 2-1 overtime win Tuesday in Game 5, as well as stopping all five shots in Game 4, after replacing Ilya Samsonov to start the third period. Woll has seen action in 36 regular-season games in his NHL career, but he looked like a seasoned veteran in beating the Bruins on Tuesday.

Zach Hyman EDM COilers' Zach Hyman: Nets seventh of the playoffs
1h agoHyman scored a goal on four shots in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Kings.
Hyman put the Oilers ahead 4-2 in the final minute of the second period, deflecting a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins shot past David Rittich for the eventual game-winning goal in the 4-3 series-clinching victory. Hyman's seven goals are tied with Valeri Nichushkin for the league lead so far in the playoffs. He's picked up where he left off in the regular season, where he tallied a career-high 54 goals and 77 points in 80 games.
