Mac Jones JAC QBJaguars' Mac Jones: Fifth-year option not picked up
4h agoThe Jaguars didn't pick up Jones' fifth-year contract option, AL.com reports.
While Jacksonville picked up the fifth-year options of starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence and top running back Travis Etienne, the team elected not to do so with Jones, who the Patriots took 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The decision wasn't surprising, given that the value of the Alabama product's option was $25.6 million, the same figure that applied to Lawrence. With the Jaguars, Michael DiRocco of ESPN notes that Jones -- who was obtained from New England in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick -- is slated to compete with C.J. Beathard to be the team's top backup signal caller in 2024 and potentially beyond. During his three-year stint with the Patriots, Jones drew 42 starts, but the 25-year-old's 2023 campaign wound up with him being benched after Week 12 in favor of Bailey Zappe.

Odell Beckham Jr. BAL WRDolphins' Odell Beckham: Signing one-year deal in Miami
5h agoBeckham is signing a one-year contract with the Dolphins, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
It's a $3 million contract that can go up to $8.25 million with incentives, per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com. Beckham signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Baltimore last offseason, and while his numbers were solid on a per-route and per-target basis, he never reached even 60 percent snap share after Week 1. He won't have to play too many snaps in Miami, where Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are the top WRs and head coach Mike McDaniel uses FB Alec Ingold a lot. The Dolphins had three or more WRs on the field for just 48 percent of their plays last year, the third-lowest rate in the league. On the other hand, Hill and Waddle tend to come off the field more often than other top receivers, which should give Beckham some chances to contribute in two-wide sets. Still, he's unlikely to have value in most fantasy leagues unless Hill or Waddle is unavailable (and even then it wouldn't necessarily be a sure thing).

5h agoSmoot signed a one-year deal with the Bills on Friday, Alec White & Maddy Glab of the team's official site reports.
Smoot, who spent the past seven seasons with the Jaguars, will provide the Bills with added defensive line depth ahead of the 2024 campaign. The 2017 third-rounder is coming off a 2023 regular season in which he recorded just 10 tackles and a sack in 12 contests, but with Buffalo Smoot should have a chance to contribute as a rotational pass rusher.

The 2016 second-rounder was an IDP factor throughout his six-year tenure with the Falcons, but over his last two campaigns Jones' tackle totals have dipped. In 13 regular-season games with the Panthers in 2023, the 29-year-old recorded 35 tackles, a sack and an interception. With the Bills, the LSU product will bolster the team's linebacker depth in 2024, and a bounce-back in production could be in order if Jones secures steady snaps in his new locale.

After playing just 89 snaps on offense as a rookie, the 2022 third-round pick got a lot more playing time (477 snaps) in his second season, essentially splitting the No. 3 receiver role with Michael Gallup for much of the year. Gallup is now in Las Vegas and hasn't been replaced by a similar veteran or early draft pick, leaving Tolbert as the likely third WR behind entrenched starters CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks. While the role won't necessarily entail a large quantity of targets, Tolbert at least would be positioned for a degree of fantasy value if Lamb were to miss any time with an injury.

Unable to make an impact in Chicago or Miami last season, Claypool now heads to his fourth NFL team for his fifth year in the league. It's about as good of a locale as he could've hoped for, as the Bills have a strong-armed franchise QB and questionable depth at WR. Claypool could perhaps serve as a deep threat off the bench even if his days as a starter are numbered.

3m agoThe Guardians recalled Strzelecki from Triple-A Columbus on Friday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
The right-hander was sent to Columbus in mid-April and will rejoin the big club for Friday's series opener versus the Angels. Strzelecki has delivered scoreless frames in his two outings for Cleveland this season.

Spencer Turnbull PHI SPPhillies' Spencer Turnbull: Could piggyback another starter
9m agoThe Phillies are considering piggybacking Turnbull with another starter, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
Turnbull's stint in the Phillies' rotation was supposed to be temporary while Taijuan Walker (shoulder) worked his way back. However, Turnbull has pitched so well -- posting a 1.67 ERA and 36:10 K:BB in 32.1 innings -- that the club is considering ways to keep him in its rotation even with Walker back in the fold. A six-man rotation hasn't been ruled out, although manager Rob Thomson has indicated it's unlikely. More likely, it seems, is that Turnbull and another starter -- either Walker or Cristopher Sanchez -- are used in tandem, with the decision on who would start and who would be in long relief that day depending on the opposition. Turnbull could still eventually shift to the bullpen -- he hasn't thrown more than 56.2 innings in a season since 2019 -- but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen yet. Thomson has indicated that he could make an announcement regarding his rotation plans as soon as Friday.

Beede has allowed 13 runs across eight innings in his last eight appearances, capped off by a five-run outing against the Astros on Thursday over one-third of an inning. His ERA has ballooned to 8.36 during that stretch after opening up the season with six scoreless innings. Righty Peter Strzelecki was recalled in a corresponding move.

Velazquez has been less and less of an everyday option for the Royals as the team continues to trot out lineups with Salvador Perez as first, Vinnie Pasquantino at DH and Freddy Fermin behind the dish. Velazquez hasn't done much to warrant an everyday role after starting the season red-hot, with just one hit in his last 27 at-bats.

Grandal got a late start to the season while battling plantar fasciitis in his left foot, but he participated in nine rehab games with Triple-A Indianapolis and is feeling well enough to join the active roster. The veteran catcher is likely to share starts behind the dish with Joey Bart.

4h agoHield amassed 20 points (6-10 FG, 6-9 3Pt, 2-2 FT), four rebounds and one assist over 21 minutes during Thursday's 118-115 loss to the Knicks in Game 6 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Hield went scoreless in two of the first three games of the series and was a DNP-CD in Games 4 and 5, but he provided a lift with his scoring off the bench in Game 6, particularly when the Sixers were in a complicated spot during the second and third quarters. Hield struggled in the series, but this 20-point effort will be a reminder of what he can do when he's given a consistent role on offense, regardless of his role.

4h agoEmbiid provided 39 points (12-25 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 13-13 FT), 13 rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal over 40 minutes before fouling out of Thursday's 118-115 loss to the Knicks in Game 6 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Embiid was clearly not 100 percent healthy throughout the series, and the limitations were more noticeable as the series progressed but still posted outstanding stat lines, scoring 29 or more points in four of the six contests. He also recorded three double-doubles and a triple-double, but he couldn't do the heavy lifting on his own in the games where Tyrese Maxey struggled. Between the Play-In win over the Heat and the first-round series against the Knicks, Embiid averaged 31.6 points, 11.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.3 blocks across 41.0 minutes per game.

4h agoMaxey recorded 17 points (6-18 FG, 1-6 3Pt, 4-4 FT), five rebounds, five assists and two steals over 43 minutes during Thursday's 118-115 loss to the Knicks in Game 6 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Maxey was coming off a heroic performance in Game 5, scoring 46 points and making some clutch buckets to keep the 76ers alive in the series. However, he wasn't able to deliver in Game 6 and finished with more field-goal attempts than points scored. Maxey posted her lowest-scoring tally of the series in Thursday's loss, but he still averaged 29.8 points, 6.8 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game in the first round of the playoffs.

4h agoHart closed with 16 points (5-11 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 3-3 FT), 14 rebounds and seven assists over 46 minutes during Thursday's 118-115 win over the 76ers in Game 6 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Hart finished just three assists away from recording a triple-double as the Knicks clinched a 4-2 series win over the 76ers, and the small forward played a prominent role on both ends of the court throughout the first round. Hart recorded three double-doubles in the series but grabbed double-digit rebounds four times and scored 15-plus points in all but one of the six contests. Hart should have a tougher matchup in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, and it wouldn't be surprising if he ends up being matched up against Pascal Siakam for stretches.

4h agoDiVincenzo racked up 23 points (8-18 FG, 5-9 3Pt, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and two steals across 48 minutes during Thursday's 118-115 victory over Philadelphia in Game 6 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Jalen Brunson carried the Knicks to victory in this series-clinching win, but DiVincenzo deserves credit for stepping up when the team needed him the most. He was coming off a few subpar performances, as he had shot 8-for-28 from the field in the previous three games of the series, but he reached the 20-point mark for the first time in the current playoff run while also filling out the stat sheet as he normally does. The Knicks need DiVincenzo at his best if they also want to get past the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. He averaged only 12.0 points while shooting 36.4 percent from the field in the first round.

Kaiden Guhle MON DCanadiens' Kaiden Guhle: Good to play for Team Canada
7m agoGuhle, who missed the final seven games of the regular season due to a head injury, will join Team Canada for the upcoming IIHF World Championship.
Guhle finished the 2023-24 season with six goals, 22 points, 56 PIM, 116 hits and 178 blocks in 70 contests with Montreal. He served in a top-four capacity with the Canadiens, and the 22-year-old should act in a similar capacity for the franchise next campaign. In the meantime, Guhle will get in some extra high-level action during the tournament before beginning his summer training.

Marchment will miss his fourth straight contest, after he was hurt in Game 2. Marchment ended the regular season with 22 goals, 31 assists, 108 hits and a plus-22 rating in 81 appearances for the Stars. Marchment should be considered day-to-day and could return as early as Sunday for Game 7, if necessary.

1h agoFaksa (undisclosed) will be an option for Friday's Game 6 matchup with Vegas, Lia Assimakopoulos of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Even with Faksa cleared to play, he is far from a lock to take a spot in the lineup from Ty Dellandrea or Craig Smith. If the 30-year-old Faksa does suit up, it figures to be in a bottom-six role where he figures to offer mid-range fantasy value, at best, given his limited offensive upside.

Adin Hill LV GGolden Knights' Adin Hill: Expected to start Friday
2h agoHill is set to start at home against Dallas in Game 6 on Friday, per Jesse Granger of The Athletic.
Hill will get a second straight start after saving 22 of 25 shots in a 3-2 loss to the Stars on Wednesday. He had a 19-12-2 record, 2.71 GAA and .909 save percentage in 35 regular-season outings in 2023-24. Vegas needs to earn a win against Dallas, which has scored 2.80 goals per contest in the playoffs this year, to avoid elimination.

Drouin missed all five games of the opening round versus Winnipeg and has yet to make an appearance at practice. The 29-year-old had his best offensive season as an NHLer in 2023-24, picking up 56 points in 73 games, including 19 points on the power play. Drouin saw plenty of time on the top line, alongside Nathan MacKinnon. Look for Valeri Nichushkin -- who had seven goals in five games during Round 1 -- to remain on the top unit in place of Drouin.

Auston Matthews TOR CMaple Leafs' Auston Matthews: Remains in doubt for Game 7
3h agoMatthews (illness) skated Friday but is still questionable heading into Game 7 against the Maple Leafs on Saturday. Coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters, "There's been progress ... but no determination on his availability," per Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press.
Matthews' availability almost certainly won't be confirmed until closer to puck drop Saturday, so fantasy players will likely have to take a wait-and-see approach. Despite not having the world-class center in the lineup, Toronto has managed to win back-to-back games to force a Game 7. If cleared to play, Matthews figures to unseat Max Domi on the top line and No. 1 power-play unit.
