Patriots' Drake Maye: Will compete with Brissett
    9m ago

According to coach Jerod Mayo, Maye and veteran QB Jacoby Brissett are slated to compete for the Patriots' starting job in the coming months, Cameron Wolfe of NFL.com reports.

In relation to which of the signal callers will get the Week 1 assignment, Mayo noted "I would say we're going to compete all spring, we're going to compete during training camp, and the best player will start." As the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye is no doubt viewed as the team's QB of the future, but given his limited experience (just 26 collegiate starts) and that he doesn't turn 22 until August, it's plausible that he could work behind Brissett early on during his pro career. With that in mind, Maye's standing in re-draft leagues isn't as high as it is in dynasty formats, but the North Carolina's product's upside is undeniable, given that he has the prototypical size (6-foot-4, 223 pounds), arm talent and mobility of a potential star NFL quarterback.

Jaguars' Gabe Davis: Fellow WR let go
    1h ago

With Zay Jones having been released by the Jaguars, the team's wide receiver corps is now led by returnee Christian Kirk along with Davis and 2024 first-rounder Brian Thomas, Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union reports.

With both Jones and Calvin Ridley -- who led the team with 1,016 receiving yards last season -- no longer on the roster, Kirk, Davis and Thomas form a new clear-cut top trio, with Parker Washington, Tim Jones, Devin Duvernay and Elijah Cooks in the depth WR mix. With the Bills in 2023, Davis recorded 45 catches (on 81 targets) for 746 yards and seven TDs in 17 regular-season outings, and in his new locale the 25-year-old's fantasy upside hinges largely on what sort of volume he sees relative to the promising Thomas, who was viewed by most as the No. 4 wideout prospect available in last week's draft.

49ers' Deebo Samuel: Likely staying with team this year
    2h ago

Samuel wasn't traded during the 2024 NFL Draft and now seems likely to stay with the 49ers for at least one more season, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports.

The 49ers selected WRs in Rounds 1 (Ricky Pearsall) and 4 (Jacob Cowing), and while they reportedly fielded trade offers for both Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, nothing ever came to fruition. It now seems more likely that the WR group will undergo significant changes next offseason, at which point Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings are scheduled for unrestricted free agency and Samuel will have just one year remaining on his contract (with no guaranteed money). A contract extension for Aiyuk in the coming weeks/months would further increase speculation about Samuel eventually being the odd man out.

Panthers' Jonathon Brooks: On track for camp
    2h ago

Brooks (knee) remains on track to be cleared for training camp, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Brooks said the ACL tear he suffered in November didn't come with any damage to other ligaments -- a factor that likely contributed to the Panthers' confidence making him the first RB selected in the 2024 NFL Draft (46th overall). He's begun running and plans to resume cutting soon, with the intention of participating at the start of training camp in late July, shortly after his 21st birthday. Brooks didn't play much at Texas until Bijan Robinson left for the NFL, but once he got his chance the results were impressive, with Brooks recording 1,139 rushing yards and 286 receiving yards in 11 games last season. In Carolina, he joins a backfield with veterans Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders, though it isn't clear if the latter will have a role after his poor showing last season.

Broncos' Zach Wilson: Won't have option picked up
    2h ago

The Broncos don't plan to pick up the fifth-year option in Wilson's contract, Jeff Legwold of ESPN reports.

Wilson, who the Jets took with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, joined the Broncos in a trade with New York leading up to this year's draft. With his new team not in line to pick up his fifth-year option -- which would have been for a guaranteed $22.4 million -- the 24 year-old is in a position to become a free agent next March. For now, Wilson is slated to compete with first-round rookie Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham -- who started Denver's final two games of the 2023 regular season -- for the Week 1 starting assignment. While Nix is presumably viewed as the franchise's long-term answer at QB, in the short term, slotting at the position is up for grabs in advance of training camp.

Colts' Anthony Richardson: Throwing at practice
    2h ago

Richardson (shoulder) is throwing at spring practices and looks to be healthy, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.

Coach Shane Steichen said in March that he expected Richardson to be ready for OTAs in May and June. It looks like that's coming to fruition, though the QB won't necessarily be a full participant in all activities, having undergone surgery on his throwing shoulder in October. He resumed throwing in February and is the unquestioned QB1 for an offense that just added WR Adonai Mitchell in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Rays' Jose Siri: Gets three-game ban, will appeal
    11m ago

Siri (thigh) received a three-game suspension Wednesday for his role in a benches-clearing brawl Tuesday in the Rays' 8-2 loss to the Brewers, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports. He will appeal the suspension and is available off the bench for Wednesday's series finale in Milwaukee.

In addition to Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy receiving a two-game ban, three players [Siri and Brewers right-handers Abner Uribe (six games) and Freddy Peralta (five games)] were suspended for their roles in Tuesday's brawl. Uribe's punishment is the most severe since he's considered to have incited the incident in the eighth inning, when he threw a punch at Siri after the two players first started arguing when Siri was running to first base on a groundout. In his prior plate appearance in the sixth inning, Siri was hit by a pitch in the left thigh, and he'll be held out of the lineup Wednesday after Rays manager Kevin Cash said the outfielder was still dealing with some soreness. After a team off day Thursday, Siri should be ready to go for this weekend's series with the Mets, if he hasn't dropped his appeal by then or if the appeal process hasn't been completed.

Brewers' Freddy Peralta: Gets five-game ban, will appeal

Peralta was suspended five games by Major League Baseball on Wednesday for intentionally throwing at the Rays' Jose Siri in Tuesday's 8-2 win, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. He'll appeal the suspension.

The right-handed was ejected from Tuesday's contest after the umpiring crew concluded that Peralta threw at Siri intentionally one plate appearance after Siri had hit a home run. Since Peralta is appealing the suspension, he should be able to make his next scheduled start on Sunday against the Cubs, if the appeal process isn't completed before then.

Brewers' Abner Uribe: Appealing six-game suspension
    17m ago

Uribe received a six-game suspension Wednesday for his role in a benches-clearing brawl Tuesday in the Brewers' 8-2 win over the Rays, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. He has appealed the suspension and will be available for Wednesday's series finale versus Tampa Bay.

In addition to Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy receiving a two-game ban, three players [Uribe, Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta (five games) and Rays outfielder Jose Siri (three games)] were suspended for their roles in Tuesday's brawl. Uribe's punishment is the most severe since he's considered to have incited the incident in the eighth inning, when he threw a punch at Siri after Siri grounded out. Uribe was ejected from the game, but he'll appeal the six-game suspension with the hope of getting the banishment reduced.

LeVert posted three points (1-3 FG, 1-2 3Pt), one rebound, one assist, one block and two steals in 19 minutes during Tuesday's 104-103 win over Orlando in Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

LeVert is in the midst of a tough series, and although the Cavaliers were missing Jarrett Allen (ribs), the team opted to turn to Isaac Okoro and Marcus Morris rather than LeVert. Through five games, the guard has averaged only 7.2 points, 2.0 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 0.8 three-pointers on 33.3 percent shooting.

The Cavaliers were missing Jarrett Allen (ribs), and while Isaac Okoro drew the start, Morris stepped into the rotation and made a massive impact. Morris had a total of 15 minutes in this series before Tuesday, so credit to him for staying ready. For now, it remains unclear if Allen will be ready to return for Game 6 in Orlando on Friday.

Mobley accumulated 14 points (7-11 FG, 0-2 FT), 13 rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals in 39 minutes during Tuesday's 104-103 victory over the Magic in Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The Cavaliers were missing Jarrett Allen (ribs) for this game, so Mobley shifted to center and produced a masterclass on the defensive end. His emphatic block on Franz Wagner's game-tying layup attempt at the end of regulation secured the win for Cleveland, giving the Cavaliers a 3-2 series lead.

Despite a quiet night offensively, Carter still had a big impact on the game, particularly on the boards and the defensive end. However, he's had a tough series overall, averaging just 5.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists through the first five games.

Suggs wasn't able to generate much on the offensive end, and he has the unenviable task of trying to slow Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell in this series. Despite some solid counting stats, Suggs hasn't played to his full potential yet, as he's hitting just 24.0 percent from beyond the arc in his last five games.

Banchero's 39 points mark a new career high in the postseason, and this was a terrific bounce-back performance after he was held to nine points in Game 4 on Saturday. Banchero has been terrific in his first career playoff series, posting averages of 24.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.2 three-pointers through five games.
