Scott Miller ATL WR
Steelers' Scott Miller: Lands in Pittsburgh
2m agoMiller agreed to terms Wednesday on a one-year contract with the Steelers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Miller reunites with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith in Pittsburgh, after he logged a 11-161-2 across 17 appearances with the Falcons last season. He now gets a chance to compete with names like Quez Watkins, Denzel Mims, Marquez Callaway and Dez Fitzpatrick for depth opportunities with the Steelers this offseason.
-
Baylon Spector BUF LB
Bills' Baylon Spector: Fighting for top reserve role
43m agoSpector (back) is competing with Dorian Williams for Buffalo's top backup role at linebacker, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Spector appears to be recovered from the back injury that ended his 2023 season early, and he remains secure as a key special-teams contributor. Because of his draft capital as a 2023 third-round pick, Williams will likely be the favorite to win the top backup role this offseason, but Spector could have a solid chance to earn more opportunities if he can impress.
-
Jalyn Armour-Davis BAL CB
Ravens' Jalyn Armour-Davis: On roster bubble?
1h agoDavis (concussion) could be on the roster bubble to begin training camp, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.
Armour-Davis, a 2022 fourth-round pick, suited up for just four games as a rookie then eight games in 2023, when he ended year on IR with a concussion. He could have his work cut out to earn a roster spot, especially given that he mostly contributed on special teams in 2023.
-
Martavis Bryant DAL WR
Martavis Bryant: Let go by Dallas
1h agoThe Cowboys informed Bryant on Wednesday that he will be released, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Bryant, who last suited up for an NFL game in 2018 with the Raiders, signed a reserve/future contract with Dallas earlier this offseason but will now have to search for an opportunity to reignite his career elsewhere. His release does not result in any dead money against the salary cap for the Cowboys, per Gehlken.
-
Ben DiNucci DEN QB
Ben DiNucci: Let go by Denver
2h agoThe Broncos are slated to release DiNucci, Parker Gabriel of the Denver Post reports.
DiNucci, who spent the 2023 season on the Broncos' practice squad, was elevated to the team's game-day roster three times, but didn't log any regular-season snaps. With the 2020 third-rounder no longer in the mix, Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson currently head Denver's QB corps.
-
Justin Shorter BUF WR
Bills' Justin Shorter: Candidate for depth WR role
2h agoShorter, whose rookie season was derailed by a hamstring injury, is in line to compete for depth slotting behind fellow wide receivers Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman and Curtis Samuel, the Buffalo News reports.
The Bills took Shorter in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, but he never saw game action after being placed on IR ahead of the regular season. Though Shorter was designated to return from IR in December and was subsequently able to practice with the team, he wasn't activated when his 21-day window closed. Now presumably past his hamstring issue, the 6-4, 223-pounder is slated to vie with Chase Claypool, Mack Hollins, KJ Hamler, Andy Isabella and Quintez Cephus for a reserve WR/special teams role in his second campaign with Buffalo.
-
Blaze Alexander ARI SS
Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Fading into reserve role
2m agoAlexander is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds.
Alexander is on the bench for a third straight game, with all three absences coming against right-handed pitching. The rookie has a lowly .544 OPS over his past nine games and has gotten poor reviews for his work in the field, so he looks like he'll remain in a backup role at shortstop behind Kevin Newman until Geraldo Perdomo (knee) is back from the injured list.
-
Dylan Moore SEA SS
Mariners' Dylan Moore: Keeps up hard hitting Tuesday
3m agoMoore went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, a triple, a walk and two runs in a win over the Twins on Tuesday.
Moore's propensity for hard contact was on full display again Tuesday, with the veteran utility man belting his seventh and eighth extra-base hits of the season. Moore has already tied a career high with his pair of three-baggers, and with four doubles, he's just under halfway to his 2023 total of nine in that department. The 31-year-old came into Tuesday with a .143 average and 32.3 percent strikeout rate over the prior 10 games, making his first multi-hit effort since April 24 a particularly welcome sight.
-
Jorge Alcala MIN RP
Twins' Jorge Alcala: Heads back to Triple-A
4m agoThe Twins optioned Alcala to Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Alcala allowed four runs and threw 48 pitches over two innings in Tuesday's loss to the Mariners, so he's being sent out in favor of a fresh arm. Josh Staumont will join the bullpen.
-
Julio Rodriguez SEA CF
Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: On base thrice in Tuesday's win
7m agoRodriguez went 1-for-3 with a single, two walks, a stolen base and a run in a win over the Twins on Tuesday.
Rodriguez deployed the small-ball strategy to great effectiveness Tuesday, pushing his OBP for the season back over the .300 mark (.309) in the process. The steal was Rodriguez's eighth of the season in 10 attempts, but he's still sitting on just a single home run and five extra-base hits overall in 152 plate appearances after averaging one XBH every 10.1 trips to the batter's box a season ago. Both Rodriguez's barrel percentage (6.4) and hard-hit percentage (30.9) have taken notable dips from their respective 11.9 percent and 38.87 percent figures in 2023, partly explaining the power drought.
-
Jacob Wilson OAK SS
Athletics' Jacob Wilson: Moves up to Triple-A
11m agoThe Athletics promoted Wilson from Double-A Midland to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Wilson made a mockery of Double-A pitching, slashing .455/.473/.705 with three home runs and 13 doubles in 22 games. The 22-year-old is now just one step away from the big leagues less than a year after the Athletics took him with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft. Wilson doesn't project to show much power, but his hit tool has been as advertised thus far in his professional career.
-
Jonathan Ornelas TEX 2B
Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Sent back to Triple-A
15m agoThe Rangers optioned Ornelas to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday.
Ornelas' stay with the big club lasted just two days, as he was sent back to Round Rock while the Rangers were in need of added pitching depth heading into Wednesday's doubleheader with the Athletics. The 23-year-old infielder appeared in one game during his time with the Rangers, going hitless in his lone at-bat.
-
Luka Doncic DAL PG
Mavericks' Luka Doncic: Practices, probable for Game 2
15m agoCoach Jason Kidd said Doncic (knee) practiced Wednesday and is probable for Thursday's Game 2 against the Thunder, Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Doncic continues to play through a right knee sprain but was far from his best in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals, as he finished with 19 points (6-19 FG) and five turnovers. The MVP candidate is shooting just 39.5 percent during the postseason but remains productive and is averaging 28.3 points, 9.4 assists, 8.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 42.3 minutes per game.
-
Derrick White BOS SG
Celtics' Derrick White: Shines in Game 1 victory
5h agoWhite registered 25 points (9-16 FG, 7-12 3Pt), one rebound and five assists in 33 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 victory over Cleveland in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
White embraced a bigger role on offense on a night when Jayson Tatum struggled (7-19 FG, 0-5 3Pt, 4-4 FT), and the former responded by delivering his third consecutive game with 25 or more points. White has taken a step forward due to Kristaps Porzingis (calf) being sidelined, and it'd be fair to consider him Boston's third-best offensive weapon under the current lineup construction. White will aim to keep the streak alive in Game 2 on Thursday, as the Celtics have gone 20-3 this season when he's scored 20 or more points between the regular season and the playoffs.
-
Jaylen Brown BOS SF
Celtics' Jaylen Brown: Leads Boston in scoring
5h agoBrown notched 32 points (12-18 FG, 4-6 3Pt, 4-4 FT), six rebounds, two assists and one block across 34 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 win over the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Jayson Tatum had a rough shooting performance in the series opener, but Brown was there to pick him up, and the latter led the Celtics in scoring with an impressive, efficient display on the offensive end of the court. Brown has scored 20 or more points in four of his last five playoff appearances, and he'll aim to keep that streak alive in Game 2 on Thursday.
-
Jayson Tatum BOS PF
Celtics' Jayson Tatum: Rough shooting effort Tuesday
5h agoTatum totaled 18 points (7-19 FG, 0-5 3Pt, 4-4 FT), 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks over 35 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 victory over the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
The Celtics cruised to a 25-point win in the series opener, but Tatum's shooting struggles can't be overlooked, as he had a rough outing and struggled to get things going offensively. The fact that he still came close to reaching the 20-point mark while also posting a double-double goes to show just how immensely talented he is, as he can post above-average numbers even when he has a down night by his standards. Tatum will aim to deliver a bounce-back performance in Game 2 on Thursday.
-
Darius Garland CLE PG
Cavaliers' Darius Garland: Poor shooting display Tuesday
5h agoGarland had 14 points (6-15 FG, 2-8 3Pt), three rebounds, five assists and one steal over 36 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 loss to the Celtics in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Garland is in line for a rough matchup in this series, as he'll have to deal with two excellent defenders in Jrue Holiday and Derrick White, so his Game 1 display is not entirely surprising. He didn't have his best performances in the first-round series against the Magic either, and he's averaging just 14.8 points and 5.4 assists per game through eight playoff appearances. In fact, Garland has failed to surpass the 15-point mark in six of his eight playoff outings, a clear downgrade after averaging 18.0 points per contest during the regular season.
-
Donovan Mitchell CLE SG
Cavaliers' Donovan Mitchell: Puts up 33 points in Game 1 loss
5h agoMitchell produced 33 points (12-25 FG, 4-11 3Pt, 5-5 FT), six rebounds, five assists and one steal across 37 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 loss to the Celtics in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Mitchell carried the momentum he had from his epic Game 7 performance against the Magic on Sunday and surpassed the 30-point mark once again. However, the rest of his teammates didn't step up, and the Cavaliers suffered a devastating 25-point loss in the series opener. Mitchell should continue to post excellent numbers as the Cavaliers' go-to player on offense -- by a wide margin -- but there's a chance his mighty performances might not translate into wins as it happened against the Magic in the previous round.
-
Elias Pettersson VAN C
Canucks' Elias Pettersson: Ready to rock for Game 1
1h agoPettersson (illness) will play Wednesday in Game 1 versus the Oilers, Thomas Drance of The Athletic reports.
Pettersson should slot into his usual spots on the second line and first power-play unit Wednesday. The 25-year-old pivot was a bit pedestrian in the first round against the Predators, picking up just three helpers through six games after racking up 34 goals and 89 points through 82 regular-season contests.
-
Arturs Silovs VAN G
Canucks' Arturs Silovs: Making fourth straight start
1h agoSilovs was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate, per Kevin Woodley of NHL.com, putting him on track to guard the home crease versus Edmonton in Game 1 on Wednesday.
Silovs was excellent after being thrust into action in the first round versus Nashville due to injuries to Thatcher Demko (knee) and Casey DeSmith, who is now healthy but was dealing with a lower-body injury. Silovs went 2-1-0 while posting an impressive 1.70 GAA and .938 save percentage through three appearances against the Predators. The Connor McDavid-led Oilers offense racked up 22 goals through five games in the first round versus Winnipeg, so Silovs will likely be tested early and often Wednesday.
-
Oskar Lindblom SJ LW
Oskar Lindblom: Signs with Swedish club
2h agoLindblom signed a contract with Brynas IF of the SHL on Wednesday, Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
Lindblom appeared in just one game for the Sharks in 2023-24, so it's not surprising to see him head to his native Sweden to continue his professional playing career. At this point it'd be surpsing to see Lindblom return to the NHL in the future.
-
Jeremy Swayman BOS G
Bruins' Jeremy Swayman: Slated to start
4h agoSwayman was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate, per Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald, putting him on track to guard the road goal in Wednesday's Game 2 versus Florida.
Swayman was exceptional in Monday's Game 1, turning aside 38 of 39 shots en route to a convincing 5-1 win. As long as the 25-year-old netminder continues to play at this level, it seems unlikely coach Jim Montgomery will go back to the rotation between Swayman and Linus Ullmark he utilized to open the Bruins' first-round series versus Toronto.
-
Sergei Bobrovsky FLA G
Panthers' Sergei Bobrovsky: In goal for Game 2
4h agoBobrovsky will patrol the home crease during Wednesday's Game 2 versus Boston, Colby Guy of Florida Hockey Now reports.
Bobrovsky struggled in Monday's Game 1 against the Bruins, surrendering four goals on only 28 shots en route to a 5-1 defeat. The 35-year-old netminder will attempt to bounce back and help the Panthers even up the series at one game apiece before heading to Beantown for Game 3 on Friday.
-
Hugh McGing STL C
Blues' Hugh McGing: Signs two-year extension
4h agoMcGing signed a two-year, two-way contract extension with the Blues on Wednesday.
McGing spent most of the 2023-24 campaign with AHL Springfield, picking up eight goals and 39 points through 51 contests, but he also drew into five games with St. Louis, going scoreless over that span. He'll likely continue to fill a similar role for the organization over the next two seasons.
