Smith did not appear in a regular-season game in 2023, and now Kansas City has decided to let him go ahead of 2024. He'll have to look for his next opportunity with a different squad.

Miller initially signed with the Chiefs back in January, but after using both free agency and the draft to add depth at wide receiver, Kansas City has now chosen to part ways with him. He hasn't appeared in a regular-season game since 2021.

3h agoTravis, who is bouncing back from an ankle injury that he suffered last November, should be cleared for training camp, per coach Robert Saleh, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports.
At this stage, Travis -- who the Jets took in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft -- continues to rebound from ankle surgery, with Cimini noting that the young QB was spotted riding a stationary bike during part of the practice that took place Friday at the start of the team's rookie minicamp. Early on in his pro career, Travis is slated to work behind the veteran duo of Aaron Rodgers (Achilles) and Tyrod Taylor, but when healthy, the Florida State product profiles as dual-threat signal-caller with intriguing playmaking ability for the Jets to develop.

3h agoAccording to coach Robert Saleh, Rodgers will have "no restrictions" when the Jets begin their OTA practices May 20, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports.
After suffering a torn left Achilles four snaps into his first season with the Jets, Rodgers underwent surgery to address the issue Sept. 14. While the veteran signal-caller didn't see any game action prior to the conclusion of the 2023 campaign, he did practice on a limited basis down the stretch. With that in mind, it's not surprising that the 40-year-old is on track to practice in full during phase three of New York's OTAs later this month. When it comes to his supporting cast this coming season, Tyrod Taylor is slated to serve as the team's No. 2 QB, top running back Breece Hall is further removed from the ACL tear that derailed his 2022 season, and the team's wideout corps has been fortified by free-agent addition Mike Williams (knee) and 2024 third-rounder Malachi Corley. Still, Rodgers' fantasy upside hinges on whether he's able to avoid any setbacks as he looks to regain his pre-injury form.

7h agoThe Jaguars didn't pick up Jones' fifth-year contract option, AL.com reports.
While Jacksonville picked up the fifth-year options of starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence and top running back Travis Etienne, the team elected not to do so with Jones, who the Patriots took 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The decision wasn't surprising, given that the value of the Alabama product's option was $25.6 million, the same figure that applied to Lawrence. With the Jaguars, Michael DiRocco of ESPN notes that Jones -- who was obtained from New England in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick -- is slated to compete with C.J. Beathard to be the team's top backup signal-caller in 2024, and potentially beyond. During his three-year stint with the Patriots, Jones drew 42 starts, but the 25-year-old's 2023 campaign wound up with him being benched after Week 12 in favor of Bailey Zappe.

Heyward landed on the 10-day IL on April 3 due to lower back tightness. The injury persisted well past his return window, and Friday marked the firs time that the veteran outfielder has participated in any sort of activity. The Dodgers will have a better idea on how to move forward once they see how Heyward's back responds to his most recent work.

Kyle Nelson ARI RPDiamondbacks' Kyle Nelson: Likely done for 2024
15m agoDiamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Friday that Nelson (shoulder) will likely be out for the rest of the 2024 season following his surgery scheduled for May 6, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Nelson was transferred to the 60-day IL on Tuesday after injuring his left shoulder. Nelson received multiple opinions on how to proceed, but it was ultimately recommended that the southpaw undergo thoracic outlet syndrome surgery. Any hope that he would be able to return late in the season seems to have fizzled with Lovullo's latest comments. Nelson appeared in 11 games for Arizona before his injury, posting a 4.22 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 10.2 frames.

28m agoMurphy (oblique) began hitting off the tee during Atlanta's most recent series against Seattle earlier this week, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
It's the first time Murphy has swung the bat since landing on the 10-day IL on March 30 with a Grade 1 left oblique strain. Prior to the series in Seattle, Murphy was limited to light throwing and catching work in the bullpen. The 29-year-old has taken a positive step in his program, but he still has a ways to go before starting a rehab assignment.

Thomas has been progressing through a left hamstring strain he sustained against the Rockies on March 31. Friday's stint with Triple-A Reno will be Thomas' first rehab assignment, and he will play in center field over the weekend. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo hinted Friday that Thomas could return from the 10-day IL as soon as Tuesday, per Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic.

1h agoManager Alex Cora said Friday that Yoshida will get a second opinion on his strained left thumb, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
Cora previously said Thursday that Yoshida may need to undergo surgery on his thumb after straining it during Sunday's win over the Cubs, but the 30-year-old will wait to hear from another doctor before determining the best course of action. Yoshida has slashed .275/.348/.388 with 11 RBI across 89 plate appearances this season, and an update on his status should be available within the next several days.

1h agoDiamondbacks manager Torrey Lovullo said Friday that Sewald (oblique) is expected back Tuesday for Arizona's road trip, John Gambadoro of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Sewald's rehab program was paused after the right-hander experienced soreness from his appearance with Triple-A Reno earlier this week. He returned to action with a bullpen session Wednesday, and the right-hander is slated to pitch in an extended game Saturday, per Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com. If all goes well, Sewald could be back with the team as soon as Tuesday in Cincinnati. Sewald registered 34 saves last season, posting a 3.12 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 60.2 innings with Arizona and Seattle.

3h agoDiPietro was reassigned to AHL Providence on Friday, per Mark Divver of the New England Hockey Journal.
DiPietro was summoned Tuesday so the Bruins would have a third goaltender on their playoff roster. He might be recalled ahead of Game 7 on Saturday against Toronto to continue to serve that function. DiPietro hasn't played for Boston in the regular season or playoffs in 2023-24, but he did record a 2.51 GAA and a .918 save percentage in 30 regular-season outings with Providence.

3h agoGuhle, who missed the final seven games of the regular season due to a head injury, will join Team Canada for the upcoming IIHF World Championship.
Guhle finished the 2023-24 season with six goals, 22 points, 56 PIM, 116 hits and 178 blocks in 70 contests with Montreal. He served in a top-four capacity with the Canadiens, and the 22-year-old should act in a similar capacity for the franchise next campaign. In the meantime, Guhle will get in some extra high-level action during the tournament before beginning his summer training.

Marchment will miss his fourth straight contest, after he was hurt in Game 2. Marchment ended the regular season with 22 goals, 31 assists, 108 hits and a plus-22 rating in 81 appearances for the Stars. Marchment should be considered day-to-day and could return as early as Sunday for Game 7, if necessary.
