Drake Maye NE QBPatriots' Drake Maye: Will compete with Brissett
33m agoAccording to coach Jerod Mayo, Maye and veteran QB Jacoby Brissett are slated to compete for the Patriots' starting job in the coming months, Cameron Wolfe of NFL.com reports.
In relation to which of the signal callers will get the Week 1 assignment, Mayo noted "I would say we're going to compete all spring, we're going to compete during training camp, and the best player will start." As the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye is no doubt viewed as the team's QB of the future, but given his limited experience (just 26 collegiate starts) and that he doesn't turn 22 until August, it's plausible that he could work behind Brissett early on during his pro career. With that in mind, Maye's standing in re-draft leagues isn't as high as it is in dynasty formats, but the North Carolina's product's upside is undeniable, given that he has the prototypical size (6-foot-4, 223 pounds), arm talent and mobility of a potential star NFL quarterback.

Gabe Davis JAC WRJaguars' Gabe Davis: Fellow WR let go
2h agoWith Zay Jones having been released by the Jaguars, the team's wide receiver corps is now led by returnee Christian Kirk along with Davis and 2024 first-rounder Brian Thomas, Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union reports.
With both Jones and Calvin Ridley -- who led the team with 1,016 receiving yards last season -- no longer on the roster, Kirk, Davis and Thomas form a new clear-cut top trio, with Parker Washington, Tim Jones, Devin Duvernay and Elijah Cooks in the depth WR mix. With the Bills in 2023, Davis recorded 45 catches (on 81 targets) for 746 yards and seven TDs in 17 regular-season outings, and in his new locale the 25-year-old's fantasy upside hinges largely on what sort of volume he sees relative to the promising Thomas, who was viewed by most as the No. 4 wideout prospect available in last week's draft.

Deebo Samuel SF WR49ers' Deebo Samuel: Likely staying with team this year
2h agoSamuel wasn't traded during the 2024 NFL Draft and now seems likely to stay with the 49ers for at least one more season, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports.
The 49ers selected WRs in Rounds 1 (Ricky Pearsall) and 4 (Jacob Cowing), and while they reportedly fielded trade offers for both Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, nothing ever came to fruition. It now seems more likely that the WR group will undergo significant changes next offseason, at which point Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings are scheduled for unrestricted free agency and Samuel will have just one year remaining on his contract (with no guaranteed money). A contract extension for Aiyuk in the coming weeks/months would further increase speculation about Samuel eventually being the odd man out.

2h agoBrooks (knee) remains on track to be cleared for training camp, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Brooks said the ACL tear he suffered in November didn't come with any damage to other ligaments -- a factor that likely contributed to the Panthers' confidence making him the first RB selected in the 2024 NFL Draft (46th overall). He's begun running and plans to resume cutting soon, with the intention of participating at the start of training camp in late July, shortly after his 21st birthday. Brooks didn't play much at Texas until Bijan Robinson left for the NFL, but once he got his chance the results were impressive, with Brooks recording 1,139 rushing yards and 286 receiving yards in 11 games last season. In Carolina, he joins a backfield with veterans Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders, though it isn't clear if the latter will have a role after his poor showing last season.

2h agoThe Broncos don't plan to pick up the fifth-year option in Wilson's contract, Jeff Legwold of ESPN reports.
Wilson, who the Jets took with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, joined the Broncos in a trade with New York leading up to this year's draft. With his new team not in line to pick up his fifth-year option -- which would have been for a guaranteed $22.4 million -- the 24 year-old is in a position to become a free agent next March. For now, Wilson is slated to compete with first-round rookie Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham -- who started Denver's final two games of the 2023 regular season -- for the Week 1 starting assignment. While Nix is presumably viewed as the franchise's long-term answer at QB, in the short term, slotting at the position is up for grabs in advance of training camp.

3h agoRichardson (shoulder) is throwing at spring practices and looks to be healthy, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Coach Shane Steichen said in March that he expected Richardson to be ready for OTAs in May and June. It looks like that's coming to fruition, though the QB won't necessarily be a full participant in all activities, having undergone surgery on his throwing shoulder in October. He resumed throwing in February and is the unquestioned QB1 for an offense that just added WR Adonai Mitchell in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

He hasn't played since exiting Saturday's game versus the Rangers following a hit-by-pitch on the right hand. The Reds have an off day Thursday, so they could be aiming for Stephenson to return to action Friday. Luke Maile is catching again Wednesday.

It's the fourth straight start he's missed due to lingering left hand soreness following a hit-by-pitch. Encarnacion-Strand has been available off the bench the last two days and presumably will be again Wednesday. He could be back in the lineup Friday after the Reds' off day Thursday. Jeimer Candelario is at first base Wednesday.

11m agoRenfroe is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.
Renfroe looked to be on the outs for an everyday role when he was held out of the lineup for consecutive games last Thursday and Friday, but he started in each of the past four games. However, Renfroe went just 1-for-12 with two walks in those contests, and he now finds himself back on the bench while his season-long slash line now sits at .150/.218/.263. Adam Frazier will get the nod in right field Wednesday, and manager Matt Quartaro could be inclined to lean on a timeshare between Frazier and Renfroe at that spot in the lineup until one player starts to heat up at the plate.

13m agoTucker went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and a stolen base against Philadelphia in a loss Tuesday.
Tucker got his second straight start at DH and was one of only two Angels with multiple hits in the defeat. The veteran swiped a bag in the fifth inning, becoming the second player in team history to notch a theft in each of his first two games with the club, per Angels Senior Communications Manager Matt Birch. Tucker swiped as many as 47 bases in the minors (in 2017), but he hasn't recorded more than 11 thefts in a professional campaign since 2018.

Bart appears to have wrested the No. 1 catching job away from Henry Davis, but the former will hit the bench for Wednesday's day game after spending eight innings behind the dish in a 5-2 loss Tuesday night. Davis will draw the start Wednesday, but he could be headed to Triple-A Indianapolis if Yasmani Grandal (foot) is reinstated from the 10-day injured list this weekend.

19m agoNeto went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Tuesday in a loss to the Phillies.
Neto plated the Angels' first run with a 408-foot blast in the third inning. It was his second long ball over his past six games after he failed to go deep in any of his first 23 contests of the campaign. Neto has gotten off to a slow start to 2024, slashing .228/.278/.356 with eight runs, 11 RBI and four steals through 108 plate appearances. His strikeout rate sits at 30.6 percent, a significant increase over his 23.4 percent rate as a rookie last year.

LeVert is in the midst of a tough series, and although the Cavaliers were missing Jarrett Allen (ribs), the team opted to turn to Isaac Okoro and Marcus Morris rather than LeVert. Through five games, the guard has averaged only 7.2 points, 2.0 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 0.8 three-pointers on 33.3 percent shooting.

3h agoMorris finished Tuesday's 104-103 victory over Orlando in Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with 12 points (4-9 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 2-2 FT), three rebounds and one assist in 26 minutes.
The Cavaliers were missing Jarrett Allen (ribs), and while Isaac Okoro drew the start, Morris stepped into the rotation and made a massive impact. Morris had a total of 15 minutes in this series before Tuesday, so credit to him for staying ready. For now, it remains unclear if Allen will be ready to return for Game 6 in Orlando on Friday.

The Cavaliers were missing Jarrett Allen (ribs) for this game, so Mobley shifted to center and produced a masterclass on the defensive end. His emphatic block on Franz Wagner's game-tying layup attempt at the end of regulation secured the win for Cleveland, giving the Cavaliers a 3-2 series lead.

3h agoCarter closed Tuesday's 104-103 loss to the Cavaliers in Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with seven points (3-6 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 1-2 FT), 11 rebounds, two assists, three blocks and one steal across 33 minutes.
Despite a quiet night offensively, Carter still had a big impact on the game, particularly on the boards and the defensive end. However, he's had a tough series overall, averaging just 5.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists through the first five games.

Suggs wasn't able to generate much on the offensive end, and he has the unenviable task of trying to slow Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell in this series. Despite some solid counting stats, Suggs hasn't played to his full potential yet, as he's hitting just 24.0 percent from beyond the arc in his last five games.

Banchero's 39 points mark a new career high in the postseason, and this was a terrific bounce-back performance after he was held to nine points in Game 4 on Saturday. Banchero has been terrific in his first career playoff series, posting averages of 24.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.2 three-pointers through five games.

1h agoPesce (lower body) is no longer using a walking boot and might be able to return during Carolina's upcoming second-round series against the Rangers, Chip Alexander of The Raleigh News & Observer reports Wednesday.
Pesce had three goals, 13 points, 20 PIM, 25 hits and 113 blocks in 70 regular-season outings. The 29-year-old is likely to serve in a top-four capacity once he's healthy.

DeAngelo played in the last three games for the Canes while Brett Pesce (lower body) was unavailable. For now, DeAngelo should be in the lineup for Game 1, whenever it is announced, but will likely be relegated to the press box once Pesce, who is expected to return at some point versus New York, is cleared to play.

Peeke had a goal, 10 points, 14 PIM, 88 hits and 78 blocks in 38 contests between Columbus and Boston during the regular season. His timetable rules him out for the remainder of the first round, but Peeke might be an option later in the playoffs if the Bruins advance. Boston holds a 3-2 series lead over Toronto heading into Game 6 on Thursday.

While Skjei remains goalless in his last 11 outings, the blueliner has tallied an impressive 10 helpers over that stretch, including three with the man advantage. With injuries pilling up among the Canes' defensemen, the 30-year-old Skjei could see an uptick in both even strength and power-play minutes heading into the next round of the playoffs.

1h agoBarzal notched a pair of assists in a 6-3 Game 5 loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday.
Barzal put up decent numbers in the postseason, recording two goals and three assists in five games. Still, it wasn't enough to get the Isles past Carolina and into the next round of the playoffs. During the regular season, the 26-year-old center averaged a point per game, a scoring rate he hasn't achieved since the 2017-18 campaign when he was a rookie.
