Commanders' Mike Sainristil: Second-round pick for Washington
    2m ago

The Commanders selected Sainristil in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 50th overall.

Sainristil might be limited to the slot at just 5-foot-10, 182 pounds, but the former Michigan standout should excel there at least. He was a standout presence in a suffocating Wolverines defense that arguably carried Michigan to its National Title victory in 2023, and his workout numbers indicate the ability to cover ground effectively (4.47-second 40-yard dash, 40-inch vertical, 131-inch broad jump). Sainristil should immediately take over the slot position for Washington and might even have an outside chance of winning a starting role.

Steelers' Zach Frazier: Onward to the Steel City
    6m ago

The Steelers selected Frazier in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 51st overall.

Pittsburgh continues to build up the offensive line in this draft, following up first-rounder Troy Fautanu with Frazier. The West Virginia product was a state champion wrestler in high school, which is oftentimes a quality trait that transfers over to playing center. Frazier has the anchor to hold up against stout defenders at 313 pounds with bear-paw hands (10.88 inches) to clutch and redirect. Pittsburgh is adding physicality and talent to its offensive line thus far.

Jaguars' Maason Smith: Jacksonville picks up in round two
    8m ago

The Jaguars selected Smith in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 48th overall.

Smith was a surprising selection -- something of a recurring theme with GM Trent Baalke whenever he gets out of the first round -- and it wouldn't be shocking if this pick is recalled somewhat bitterly in upcoming years. The case for the former LSU tackle is that he's a plus athlete at 6-foot-5, 306 pounds (5.01-second 40-yard dash, 31-inch vertical), and with 35-inch arms Smith has incredible reach. The problem is that he just wasn't very productive at LSU, starting just his junior season after tearing his ACL his second season and playing off the bench as a freshman. Fellow LSU tackle Mekhi Wingo might prove the better NFL prospect.

Panthers' Jonathon Brooks: Carolina picks up in second round
    16m ago

The Panthers selected Brooks (knee) in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 46th overall.

All indications are that the recovery is going well, but the most pressing question for Brooks (6-feet, 216 pounds) is how soon he might be 100 percent healthy after suffering an ACL tear November 11. Once he's healthy the former Texas standout will likely be favored for playing time at running back for Carolina, though the evidence of him having more ability than either of Chuba Hubbard or Miles Sanders is a bit elusive in the meantime. Where Brooks might carve out most of his immediate fantasy value could be on passing downs, as he definitely has better pass-catching ability than either of Hubbard or Sanders. That, and the Panthers should spend plenty of time losing while trying to catch up in the second halves of games.

Giants' Tyler Nubin: Fills safety need for Big Blue
    19m ago

The Giants selected Nubin in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 47th overall.

Safety is one of the weaker positions in this class and Nubin is the first to come off the board in the middle of the second round. It's a strong value for the Giants as it gets the best safety in the class after losing Xavier McKinney in free agency this offseason. Nubin got by on impressive instincts at Minnesota with 13 career interceptions. He didn't test at the combine due to a knee issue and only ran a 4.59 in the 40 at the Gopher pro day, so teams could test his speed down the field. 207 career tackles show a willingness to get his nose dirty and play the run, which is a strong complement to his coverage chops.

Packers' Edgerrin Cooper: Going up north to Green Bay
    25m ago

The Packers selected Cooper in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 45th overall.

It's a light class at inside linebacker, but with De'Vondre Campbell's departure this offseason, it was a need for Green Bay. Cooper is arguably the top-rated from this linebacker group. The linebacker position is getting smaller and faster league-wide and Cooper fits that mold at 6-foot-2 and just 230 pounds who compensates for his frame with 4.51 speed. He led the SEC in tackles for loss in 2023 (17.0) and showed some pass-rush chops with eight sacks at Texas A&M. He will need to get by on his athleticism and likely add some bulk in order to reliably hold up against the run at the next level but there are traits here that can make him a fixture in the Green Bay linebacking corps.

Giants' Alex Cobb: Pauses throwing program
    1h ago

Cobb (hip/elbow/shoulder) has been held back from throwing for the last few days due to soreness in his right shoulder, and he is set to see a team doctor Friday night, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.comreports.

Cobb was shifted to the 60-day IL on April 20 to give him more time to recover from his multiple ailments. He underwent left hip surgery in the offseason and was progressing through his rehab assignment following spring training, but he has suffered another setback with right shoulder soreness this time. Cobb's visit with the team doctor Friday night should give him and the Giants a better idea of the next steps forward in his rehab schedule.

Nicolas has looked better in Triple-A this season, posting a 0.84 ERA and 2.06 WHIP over 10.2 innings, and he'll get another shot in Pittsburgh's bullpen.
