Gabe Davis JAC WRJaguars' Gabe Davis: Expected back for training camp
29m agoDavis (knee) should be cleared for training camp, Zach Goodall of Jaguars Wire reports.
Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said Monday that he expects Davis and a fellow new addition, defensive lineman Arik Armstead (knee), to be ready for the start of training camp. The team signed Davis to a three-year, $39 million contract in March, shortly before losing Calvin Ridley to the Titans. Jacksonville then drafted WR Brian Thomas in the first round and released Zay Jones a few days laster. Davis and Christian Kirk are locked in for top-three WR roles and large snap counts, while Thomas has a bit more to prove but could ultimately become Trevor Lawrence's favorite downfield target. Davis suffered a PCL sprain Week 18 last season, causing him to miss both of Buffalo's playoff games and now all of Jacksonville's spring practices.

Darren Waller NYG TEGiants' Darren Waller: Likely announcing retirement soon
1h agoThe Giants expect Waller to announce his retirement within the next week or so, ESPN.com's Jordan Raanan reports.
The team anticipates an announcement before mandatory minicamp June 11-13, with sources close to Waller suggesting he's leaning toward retirement. He said Friday that a decision is coming soon, and he's been busy off the field working on his music career and finalizing a divorce. Waller missed five or more games each of the past three seasons and thus finished with no more than 665 yards or three TDs. He had back-to-back 1,100-yard seasons in 2019-20 with the Raiders, peaking at 107-1,196-9 in 2020. If Waller has a late change of heart and decides to play another season, he'll be part of a New York offense that signed three guards in free agency and drafted WR Malik Nabers sixth overall, though the QB situations remains as shaky as ever with Daniel Jones recovering from an ACL tear and Drew Lock taking first-team reps this spring. Daniel Bellinger, Jack Stoll and Chris Manhertz give the Giants capable blockers at tight end, while incoming fourth-round pick Theo Johnson has the speed (4.57 40) and size (6-6, 259) to develop into a receiving threat. Waller will turn 32 in September, five days after the Giants' season opener against Minnesota.

Justin Jefferson MIN WRVikings' Justin Jefferson: Signing four-year extension
1h agoJefferson and the Vikings have reached agreement on a four-year extensions, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Schefter and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network both are reporting it as a four-year, $140 million contract with $110 million guaranteed, giving Jefferson the new record for average annual value ($35 million) among non-QBs. He'll turn 25 in mid-June and already has 5,899 career receiving yards, with his average of 98.3 per game easily being the all-time record (Calvin Johnson is second at 86.1). Jefferson will enter a season without Kirk Cousins as his quarterback for the first time, instead catching passes from 10th overall pick J.J. McCarthy and/or Sam Darnold.

McManus signed a one-year deal to join Washington in March, but he'll now be looking for a new opportunity elsewhere. The Commanders don't currently have another kicker on their roster, which may change as soon as Monday.

Matt Hennessy PHI CEagles' Matt Hennessy: Active for OTAs
2d agoHennessy (knee) was an active participant at the Eagles' OTAs this past week, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Hennessy was unavailable for the entirety of the 2023 campaign with a knee injury, but he looks to be a full go ahead of 2024. The 26-year-old will likely operate as a depth option behind Landon Dickerson and Tyler Steen at offensive guard this season.

Jake Hanson NYJ CJets' Jake Hanson: Active at OTAs
2d agoHanson (concussion) is participating at the Jets' organized training activities, Zach Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
Hanson was placed on New York's injured reserve prior to last season's final week. It seems as though he has since cleared all the league's concussion protocols, given his presence at OTAs. He is projected to compete for a depth role on the team's offensive line in the upcoming season.

Vespi hasn't officially been promoted yet, but it seems the move is imminent. The left-handed reliever has made one appearance with the Orioles this season, tossing a scoreless frame last month.

Adams' eventful inning saw him sandwich swinging strikeouts of Ozzie Albies and Orlando Arcia around a walk and a pair of doubles, including Sean Murphy's go-ahead RBI two-bagger. The right-hander saw his streak of seven consecutive scoreless appearances snapped with that hit, but he retains an impressive 2.70 ERA alongside 14 holds over 28 appearances.

45m agoRed Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that he's hopeful Yoshida (thumb) could begin a minor-league rehab assignment later this week, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
Cora's comments came one day after Yoshida took live batting practice on the field and reported no issues with his strained left thumb, which has kept him out of action since April 28. Though the skipper didn't offer up a firm timeline for when Yoshida might be activated from the 10-day injured list, the 30-year-old may only need a handful of games in the minors this weekend before he's deemed ready to rejoin the Red Sox. Once activated, Yoshida should settle in as Boston's primary designated hitter, though he's likely to sit frequently against left-handed pitching.

1h agoRed Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that he's hopeful Gonzalez will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list around when he's first eligible to be activated, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
Gonzalez was joined on the IL on Sunday by fellow infielder Vaughn Grissom, who is recovering from a right hamstring strain. Grissom's injury is believed to be the more significant of the two, as he'll be sent in for an MRI, whereas Gonzalez won't be subject to any further imaging. Assuming the tightness in his left leg subsides in the coming days and he's able to resume baseball activities, Gonzalez could be ready to return from the IL for the Red Sox's three-game series with the Phillies that begins June 11. In the meantime, the Red Sox are likely to lean on Enmanuel Valdez and Jamie Westbrook as the main options at second base, with the former occupying the strong side of a platoon.

1h agoGrissom, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right hamstring strain, is slated to undergo an MRI, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. "We're not there yet," manager Alex Cora said, when asked about a timeline for Grissom's return. "He feels like it wasn't as bad as in spring training. But he's getting imaging so we'll know."
Grissom's upcoming MRI should shed light on the severity of the hamstring strain he sustained in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Tigers. As Cora notes, Grissom was previously slowed by a left groin/hamstring injury in spring training, which prevented the 23-year-old from making his Red Sox debut until May 3. For whatever length of time Grissom is sidelined this time around, Enmanuel Valdez is likely to serve as the Red Sox's primary second baseman against right-handed pitching, while Jamie Westbrook should be the main option at the keystone versus lefties.

Julien put up a 132 OPS+ last season as a rookie and opened the 2024 campaign as the Twins' leadoff man against right-handed pitching. While he started off with an .830 OPS in April this season, he posted a .482 OPS with a 36.5 percent strikeout rate since May 1. Julien could regain a regular role with Minnesota later this season, but he'll head to St. Paul for now as he looks to get back on track. Willi Castro will likely take over as the Twins' primary second baseman, with Kyle Farmer being mixed in against lefties.

The Sixth Man of the Year award winner did not fully live up to his regular-season standards in the playoffs. However, he did have a few great games against Denver and Dallas in the postseason as the Timberwolves put together an impressive run. The 24-year-old averaged 13.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.9 blocks and 0.8 steals across 24.2 minutes while appearing in 81 regular-season games. Reid will likely be a key part of the rotation next season as the Timberwolves aim for another strong playoff push in a stacked Western Conference.

Antetokounmpo missed the final three games of the Bucks' regular season, followed by their six playoff games prior to being eliminated by the Pacers. The superstar forward revealed following Game 6 that he was "not close" to returning to the Bucks lineup due to his calf strain. There will be roughly a two-month gap between Milwaukee's final contest and Greece's first qualifying game, and it appears the 29-year-old will be back to full health. Barring any setbacks, he should be at full strength for the start of the 2024-25 season. The two-time MVP averaged 30.4 points, 11.5 rebounds and a career-high 6.5 assists to go along with 1.2 steals, 1.1 blocks and 0.5 triples across 35.2 minutes in 73 regular-season games last season.

Alexander-Walker averaged just 3.4 points, 1.6 assists and 1.2 rebounds in 15.4 minutes across the Western Conference. He also struggled mightily with his efficiency, shooting 28.6 percent from the field and 18.8 percent from three across the five contests. However, the 25-year-old guard converted 39.1 percent of his 4.1 three-point attempts per game during the regular season and will head into the 2024-25 campaign under the last year of his two-year, $9 million contract.

Tanev avoided missing time after suffering an injury in Game 4 versus the Oilers. The defenseman did his job this postseason, picking up two assists to go with 73 blocked shots, 31 hits and a plus-7 rating over 19 playoff contests. Even at 34 years old, Tanev should have a healthy market as a steady and reliable shutdown defenseman if he makes it to free agency July 1.

Tyler Seguin DAL CStars' Tyler Seguin: Registers assist Sunday
10h agoSeguin produced an assist, two shots on goal and four hits in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Oilers in Game 6.
Seguin finished the postseason with five goals, eight assists, 59 shots on net, 32 hits and a plus-9 rating in a top-six role for the Stars, but he went without a goal in the last five contests. The 32-year-old forward was bothered by a lower-body injury late in the regular season, and it's unclear if that was still a factor in the playoffs, though he certainly played well enough to seem fully healthy. Seguin has three years left on a contract with a $9.85 million cap hit and a no-move clause, so he's a virtual lock to reprise his top-six role with the Stars in 2024-25 even though his offense doesn't match his salary at this stage of his career.

Marchment batted home a pass from Tyler Seguin while crashing the net in the third period. That goal briefly gave the Stars hope for a comeback, but a tying goal never materialized. Marchment had three goals and two assists over 13 playoff outings, though it's unclear if he had any lingering effects from an undisclosed injury he suffered in the first round. The 28-year-old winger has two years left on his current contract, so it's expected he'll around to provide grit and depth scoring in a middle-six role for the Stars in 2024-25.

10h agoOettinger gave up two goals on 10 shots in Sunday's season-ending 2-1 loss to the Oilers in Game 6.
The Oilers struck twice on the power play in the first period and then bunkered down. That left Oettinger with little to do over the final 40 minutes, but the Stars couldn't make a comeback to give their goalie a chance to be a hero. Oettinger's postseason comes to a close with a 10-9 record, a 2.24 GAA and a .915 save percentage over 19 appearances. He'll head into 2024-25 as the Stars' No. 1 goalie while playing for a new contract.

With just four points over six games in the Western Conference Finals, Draisaitl actually had a quiet round. That ultimately didn't matter, as Connor McDavid picked up the slack to help the Oilers make the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 2006. Draisaitl is at 10 goals, 18 helpers, 57 shots on goal, 17 hits and 12 PIM through 18 playoff outings. The Panthers will likely have Aleksander Barkov hard-matched with McDavid in the Stanley Cup Finals, so there could be more room for Draisaitl to make an impact on his own line.

Evan Bouchard EDM DOilers' Evan Bouchard: Two more assists in win
10h agoBouchard logged two power-play assists and blocked four shots in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Stars in Game 6.
Bouchard was held partly in check early in the series, but he racked up four helpers over the last two games as the Oilers' power play returned to its usual level of dominance. The defenseman is up to six goals, 21 helpers, 12 power-play points, 54 shots on net, 33 blocks and a plus-14 rating through 18 playoff outings. The Panthers' high pace and heavy play will be the next hurdle for Bouchard to face amid his breakout postseason as an all-around top-tier defenseman.
