Justin Fields PIT QB
Steelers' Justin Fields: Won't get fifth-year option
1h agoThe Steelers aren't expected to pick up the fifth-year option on Fields' rookie contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
It perhaps goes without saying, given that Fields is coming in as the second QB on the depth chart and would be guaranteed around $25.66 million in 2025 if the Steelers were to pick up his option before the May 2 deadline. While the team may have interest in keeping him around beyond the upcoming season, it won't be at that price before he's ever put on a Steelers uniform. Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports that fellow offseason acquisition Russell Wilson will enter offseason workouts in "pole position" at quarterback, with Fields then getting a chance to compete at some point in the future, according to coach Mike Tomlin. Fields is on track to be a free agent next spring, and his playing time between now and then seems largely dependent on Wilson struggling.

Austin Corbett CAR OG
Panthers' Austin Corbett: Returns to action
19h agoCorbett (knee) participated during Tuesday's voluntary workout, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Corbett closed out the 2023 campaign on IR after suffering a knee injury in a Week 11 loss to the Cowboys. His ability to take part in drills Tuesday suggests the Nevada product's knee is well healed as Carolina begins preparation for the upcoming season.
-
Amare Barno CAR LB
Panthers' Amare Barno: Still dealing with injury
19h agoBarno (knee) is not participating in voluntary workouts Tuesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Barno finished out the 2023 campaign on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury Week 16 against the Packers. Although it's not clear what specifically the injury was or how much longer it may affect him, it appears to still be a big enough issue that the Virginia Tech product is not taking part in drills. Luckily, for the Barno and the Panthers, training camp is still about three months away.
-
Isaiah Rodgers PHI CB
Eagles' Isaiah Rodgers: Restrictions lifted
19h agoRodgers was reinstated by the NFL on Tuesday after he was suspended for the 2023 season for violating the NFL's gambling policy, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Rodgers was originally suspended in June of 2023 after making bets on NFL games, which led to him being waived by the Colts. Despite the suspension, the UMass product inked a new deal with the Eagles two months later. With his suspension lifted, Rodgers will now be able to participate in all team activities for the first time since he signed with Philadelphia.

Patrick Surtain II DEN CB
Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Has fifth-year option picked up
20h agoThe Broncos picked up the fifth-year option on Surtain's rookie contract Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The ninth overall pick in the 2021 Draft, Surtain so far has met expectations in his three-year career, earning back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances the last two seasons and even first-team All-Pro honors in his second campaign. Overall, he has seven interceptions among 36 pass defenses in 50 regular-season contests while averaging 63.6 tackles per 17 games played, making him a respectable option in IDP formats. With Tuesday's transaction, Surtain now is locked in in Denver through the 2025 season.
-
Shaq Green-Thompson CAR OLB
Panthers' Shaq Thompson: Back on field
20h agoThompson (lower leg) is participating during voluntary workouts Tuesday, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Thompson fractured his fibula Week 2 against the Saints, which sidelined the veteran linebacker for the remainder of the 2023 campaign. His ability to take part in drills Tuesday would suggest the 30-year-old has moved past the injury and is fully healthy as the Panthers begin early preparation for the upcoming season.

Lane Thomas WAS RF
Nationals' Lane Thomas: Likely headed to injured list
5m agoNationals president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo said Wednesday in an interview on 106.7 The Fan that he anticipates Thomas (knee) going on the injured list, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
There's no word yet on the results of the MRI on Thomas' left knee, but it sounds like he's bound for the IL even if the club gets good news. Thomas was injured during Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers while stealing second base in the fifth inning. The 28-year-old has started every game in right field for the Nationals this season. Joey Gallo has seen his playing time slip a bit recently but might get some run in right with Thomas out. Trey Lipscomb is expected to take Thomas' spot on the roster.

John King STL RP
Cardinals' John King: Called up to majors
15m agoThe Cardinals recalled King from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
King will provide the St. Louis bullpen with a fresh arm after Zack Thompson -- who gave up seven earned runs over two innings of relief in Tuesday's 14-1 loss to the Diamondbacks -- was optioned to Memphis in a corresponding move. Acquired from the Rangers at the trade deadline last summer, King has previously made 22 total appearances as a member of the Cardinals, logging a 1.71 ERA while collecting 10 holds and one win over 21 innings.
-
Jose Fermin STL 2B
Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Recalled from Triple-A
16m agoThe Cardinals recalled Fermin from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Fermin was off to a fantastic start with Memphis, slashing .350/.458/.650 with four home runs, five steals and a 3:11 K:BB over 18 games. The 25-year-old will offer utility infield depth for the Cardinals, and it's possible he gets some starts at second base against lefties.
-
Jordan Walker STL RF
Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Sent down to minors
20m agoThe Cardinals optioned Walker to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Walker has hit just .155/.239/.259 this season and was recently demoted to the eight spot in the Cardinals lineup. Rather than letting Walker continue to work through his struggles at the big-league level, the Cardinals have elected to have the 21-year-old do it in a lower-pressure situation at Memphis. Alec Burleson and Ivan Herrera could both see upticks in playing time while Walker is in the minors.
-
Zack Thompson STL RP
Cardinals' Zack Thompson: Dispatched to minors
20m agoThe Cardinals optioned Thompson to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Thompson broke camp with the Cardinals in a starting role, but he was moved to the bullpen upon Sonny Gray's return from the injured list earlier this month after giving up eight earned runs over 10.1 innings between his first two turns through the rotation. The left-hander didn't adapt well to the shift to a relief role, as he produced a 13.50 ERA, 2.25 WHIP and 11:2 K:BB in 6.2 innings across his three appearances out of the bullpen before St. Louis opted to send him to the minors. Thompson will likely slot into the rotation as he heads to Memphis.
-
Tyler Alexander TB RP
Rays' Tyler Alexander: Won't start, but should pitch Wednesday
26m agoAlexander is no longer scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Tigers, but he's likely to pitch in bulk relief while Shawn Armstrong serves as the Rays' opening pitcher.
Though Alexander operated as a starter his last time out Friday against the Yankees and struck out four over 5.1 scoreless innings, he looks set to appear out of the bullpen for his upcoming turn through the rotation. Working in bulk relief isn't anything out of the ordinary for Alexander, who previously tossed six innings of two-run ball behind Armstrong in an April 14 win over the Giants. The arrangement should put Alexander in better position to be credited with a win, if the Rays are able to come away with a victory in the series finale versus Detroit.
-
Dereck Lively II DAL C
Mavericks' Dereck Lively: Sees 21 minutes in win
21m agoLively contributed seven points (2-5 FG, 3-6 FT), nine rebounds, one assist and one steal in 21 minutes during Tuesday's 96-93 win over the Clippers in Game 2 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.
Daniel Gafford started this game, but he was ineffective in just nine minutes of action and left the game briefly due to a back injury. Lively had more success, obviously, but he didn't get a ton of burn either, as Maxi Kleber and P.J. Washington soaked up the bulk of the frontcourt minutes. The logjam at center is far from ideal for fantasy purposes for both Gafford and Lively.
-
Kyle Anderson MIN SF
Timberwolves' Kyle Anderson: Does not see the floor
27m agoAnderson did not see the floor during Tuesday's 105-93 Game 2 win over the Suns.
Anderson carried a questionable tag into Game 2 after picking up a hip injury in Game 1, but despite being cleared to play, Anderson never left the bench. Instead, Minnesota rolled with an eight-man rotation with Nickeil Alexander-Walker playing 31 minutes off the bench, while Anthony Edwards (38) and Jaden McDaniels (41) also played heavy minutes on the wing.
-
Brook Lopez MIL C
Bucks' Brook Lopez: Scores 22 points in Game 2 loss
3h agoLopez recorded 22 points (8-13 FG, 6-7 3Pt), three assists, two blocks and one rebound in 29 minutes in Tuesday's 125-108 loss to the Pacers in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Though Lopez drilled a season-high six three-pointers, his rebound production was conspicuously absent. His one rebound matched a season low for Lopez, who has seen a noticeable drop in the category during his 16th NBA campaign.
-
Bobby Portis MIL PF
Bucks' Bobby Portis: Records double-double in loss
3h agoPortis supplied 14 points (6-16 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 2-3 FT), 11 rebounds, two assists and one steal across 30 minutes during Tuesday's 125-108 loss to Indiana in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Although Portis didn't come anywhere near Giannis Antetokounmpo's (calf) usual production, the former is doing enough to keep the interior afloat. Portis is expected to play at least one more game as Antetokounmpo's fill-in, but he'll need to keep the double-doubles coming. The Bucks' playoff fortunes will fade rapidly without a stronger response to Pascal Siakam and Myles Turner in the paint.
-
Damian Lillard MIL PG
Bucks' Damian Lillard: Scores team-high 34 points in loss
3h agoLillard totaled 34 points (10-21 FG, 6-13 3Pt, 8-9 FT), four rebounds, five assists and one steal in 39 minutes during Tuesday's 125-108 loss to the Pacers in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Lillard followed up his 35-point performance in Game 1 with another solid number, but his stellar play wasn't enough this time. His supporting cast was much less effective in Game 2, and Giannis Antetokounmpo's (calf) missing output continues to plague the offense. Lillard's excellent start to the postseason is no surprise, as he's averaged 29.5 points, 6.2 assists and 4.5 rebounds over 62 playoff games in his career.
-
Tyrese Haliburton IND PG
Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton: Ekes out double-double in win
3h agoHaliburton provided 12 points (4-10 FG, 3-7 3Pt, 1-2 FT), four rebounds, 12 assists, one block and one steal in 37 minutes during Tuesday's 125-108 victory over the Bucks in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Although Haliburton's former reputation as a prolific scorer has faded throughout the season, his skill as a facilitator is as strong as ever. The Pacers could use a dose of Haliburton's former shot volume as they attempt to advance, but recent trends show that big scoring numbers for the guard may not be coming. He's now gone four consecutive games with 20 points or less and has exceeded that number only four times over his past 10 games.
-
Philip Broberg EDM D
Oilers' Philip Broberg: Moved to minors
11m agoBroberg was reassigned to AHL Bakersfield on Wednesday.
Broberg is moving frequently between the NHL and minors, which is a trend that's likely to continue. He had two assists in 12 regular-season games with the Oilers. The 22-year-old has also supplied five goals and 38 points across 49 contests with Bakersfield.
-
William Nylander TOR RW
Maple Leafs' William Nylander: Could still play Wednesday
12m agoNylander (undisclosed) hasn't been officially ruled out for Game 3 against Boston on Wednesday after coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters "there's a chance" Nylander plays, Chris Johnston of The Athletic reports.
Nylander stayed on the ice late, which would normally signal he won't be ready to jump into the lineup Wednesday. When the 27-year-old forward does return, he will likely slot into a third-line role playing alongside Calle Jarnkrok and Pontus Holmberg. In addition, Nylander figures to be pressed into service in the No. 1 power-play unit.
-
Mika Zibanejad NYR C
Rangers' Mika Zibanejad: Two-point effort Tuesday
15m agoZibanejad produced a power-play goal and a shorthanded assist Tuesday in Game 2's 4-3 win over the Capitals.
After finding the back of the net in the first period, Zibanejad helped set up K'Andre Miller for what proved to be the game-winner late in the second. Zibanejad has an eight-game point streak going extended back to the end of the regular season, and through two postseason contests he's collected a goal and three points. He'll look to keep rolling on the road Friday in Game 3.
-
Brett Pesce CAR D
Hurricanes' Brett Pesce: Likely to miss rest of first round
17m agoPesce (lower body) isn't expected to return before the end of Carolina's first-round series against the Islanders, according to Chip Alexander and Luke DeCock of The New & Observer on Wednesday.
Pesce sustained the injury during Monday's 5-3 win over New York. He had three goals, 13 points, 107 shots, 25 hits and 113 blocks in 70 regular-season contests. Tony DeAngelo is projected to draw into the lineup for Game 3 on Thursday due to Pesce's absence.
-
Vincent Trocheck NYR C
Rangers' Vincent Trocheck: Two points in Game 2
18m agoTrocheck scored an even-strength goal and added a power-play assist during Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Capitals in Game 2 of the Rangers' first-round series.
Both points came in the first period as the Rangers jumped out to an early 2-1 lead. Trocheck posted a career-high 77 points in the regular season, and he's stayed hot with a goal and three points through the first two games of the playoffs.
-
Ilya Samsonov TOR G
Maple Leafs' Ilya Samsonov: In goal Wednesday
19m agoSamsonov will be between the pipes at home for Game 3 against the Bruins on Wednesday, Mark Masters of TSN reports.
Samsonov was much better in Game 2, stopping 27 of 29 shots (.931 save percentage) in a winning effort versus Boston. Barring any sort of injury concern, there is little reason to suspect that Samsonov won't remain the preferred option in the crease for as long as the Leafs remain in the postseason.
